Hi, I have a Volvo Penta TAMD 22 that has blown the head gasket for the fourth time. I am just enquiring if the engine off a mastro Car is the same engine block as the Volvo. I know the engine was built by Perkins. I would like to know if the mastro engine can be marinized to be able to rebuild my engine,

Thanks but I looking to buy a mastro engine if it works it would be a lot cheaper than rebuilding the one I have and I don’t know if it will be worth doing my tamd 22 again as there’s a problem with it blowing the head gasket

Chances of finding a decent turbo Maestro/Montego engine are pretty slim and while it is straightforward to fit the marinised parts you still end up with a not very good 30 year old engine.

Time to bite the bullet and fit a modern engine or at least look at a decent used one. Marine Enterprises are listing a new one that might be a good buy if it is still available

As a matter of interest, have your head been checked, crack tested, skimmed, block checked for warpage. The md22- tmd22 are pretty tough. We have overhauled some that has done thousands of hours without issue.

I had the same engine. Is is a marinised Montego turbo diesel, also used in the Sherpa/LDV van.

It is a very old engine now (from the 70s) and parts are hard to find.

I replaced mine with a Beta 50, which sounds like a backwards step, but actually is has more grunt and is a lot quieter and more economical too. Much more usable power.
