I have owned a number of boats over the last 30 years. Our latest acqisition came with only one set of engine keys (4 in all) and there are no Key Code tags. I want to have copies made but have been met with shaking heads, grimaces and air-sucked-through-teeth sounds. Even Volvo at Watford disappointingly referred me to a locksmith who only had a mobile telephone number for a locksmith based somewhere in Kent but I am reluctant to part with the only set of keys unless I have to. An email to Volvo Penta in Sweden has drawn a blank as has one to Storebro who I thought may keep records. I guess if I persist long enough I may draw a response but perhaps this forum will shorten the process.

Does someone out there know from where duplicates can be obtained without the key codes or where suitable blanks can be acquired? I have someone who can cut them if I have the blanks and I am prepared to live without the plastic/ foam rubber handles that these keys normally come with.

I could have sworn that I had a Volvo Penta key cut some years ago for a yacht we owned but can't remember where I went. The only other alternative I can come up with is to replace the switch panels which seems uneccessarily extreme. Sod's Law is very common with boat things!

I was in a similar situation a year ago with my first boat purchase. I took the
only set of keys to a local key cutter in Gosport town centre (can't remember the
name, but they're a national chain). They normally keep Volvo blanks in stock
although at the time they had run out, but a quick check through their catalogue
confirmed the correct blanks could be ordered in a matter of days.

Went back a week later and picked up 2 new sets which I tried on the boat without
any problems. Very reasonable price too. Try your local key cutters, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Same as the other post
I got a storebro at auction with no keys, the local locksmith (Walters Group) found a number on the ignition switch and had a blank available. couple of quid.

In an effort to help my sail/mast/string challenged friends, I did notice this advert whilst making a diligent search for a copy of the Colregs and a Sextant. Absolutely no connection with the seller and haven't a clue if they're still available for sale. It shouldn't be more than an hours work even for a moboer to extract and replace the ignition switches. http://www.boatsandoutboards.com/view/F213777

Great help, but as the original post is over 5 years old, perhaps a little late?

I'm curious how you identified this advert as being 5 years old? I can't see a date but I'm prepared to accept there may be one? I thought Boats and Outboards had a policy of purging adverts after 8 weeks?

But anyway - the good news is the seller appears to be a forumite who still has some for sale. All that's left is to teach you moboer types how to remove the switch without losing the keys in the process. This maybe an appropriate place to put a smiley except I refuse to use them!

Cheers, Brian.

The fact the search engine now works does lead to a few threads coming back from the dead!
