Volvo Penta paper gasket for D1-20F engine

Any VP dealer should be able to supply the paper gasket, which has an individual part number. Should be about three quid.

A piece of paper, a pen and some scissors should do the trick.

Or card, cardboard and if you must, gasket paper of varying thicknesses from eBay. No need for a pen or scissors because there's nothing more satisfying than gentle tapping along all the edges with a round-ended hammer or similar.

Surely The thickness of the gasket is important to ensure the correct pressure or clearance between the cover and the vanes

As PVB says above the gasket is available as a separate part @ about £3

Part number 840385 , £3.30 from Volspec

If however you have some suitable material of the right thickness cutting one with a ball pein hammer is a satisfying thing to do

Quite right, thickness is very important for some applications (your pump being a good example), but it won't affect the clamp pressure (unless something is horribly bendy).
