Volvo Penta MD2030 Slow to Start - Maybe Glow Plugs?

I feel rather foolish now!!!! I didn't realise the extra position between the ignition being on and just before you turn to start. Tried it today and the engine started like a dream. Thanks for all your help. On the plus side I have a much better understanding of the whole electrical system and have spare relays!

It's easy to miss the heat position with some of the key switches, so don't feel too bad. Glad you found it and the engine starts well.

If you do not have an owners manual, which explains the operation of the key switch, you can download one from VP's website at Manuals & Handbooks | Volvo Penta

Enter MD2030 in the "product designation" box and pick the correct version from the drop down list

But perhaps change them as a matter of course, it's £15 eliminate one possible problem. I don't have a glow plug light on my dash
You're lucky! The cheapest I can find for my engine are £15 on eBay, shipped from China - the price of official ones is shocking. And you need four of them.

I'd replace the glowplugs in a heartbeat if I believed doing so would see my engine starting snappily (it takes the longest time from cold), but they glow cherry red when I jest them with a fly lead, so I assume they're ok.

You only need 3... I just found them for £3 each on eBay, good make

I would check the relay first. Swap the start relay with the glow plug relay and see is the glow plug light comes on
You will possibly find that the relay for the starter & the glow plugs is the same. it is on the MD2020
So one idea might be to swap them over & if the starter does not work then the relay is US. It will at least test your instrument light. Costs about a tenner. More from Volvo , half the price from a motor spares shop.
In 18 years I have had 3 relays fail & it can be checked by checking voltage to the glows when you turn the key. You should get a minimum of 10.5 volts ( from memory) at the glowplug for them to work. I carry a spare relay.
