Hey guys,

I've noticed my raw water pump is leaking, mostly dripping a bit when the engine is in idle. By the looks of it, I guess it should be the shaft seal?! The access I've is very limited, so would appreciate some input as if I manage to get it out, I'd like to have all spares in place and hopefully fix it in one go.

Cheers

As far as I can remember there are two seals on the water pump shaft. There is a small hole in the casing between them so the drip gives you some warning before water gets into the engine. Spares are available from Keypart.

Fix it before it gets worse! I got salt water running down inside the chain case of my Bukh and the first I new about it was the oil leak behind the flywheel. Big repair needed. I have bought new water pump seals and bushes from bearing boys and simplybearings - this is an on-going problem so buy several sets. You might find that the shaft is badly worn.

From the look of the front cover which has been turned already it would suggest that it is likely to require a complete overhaul
There is/ was a repair kit which is expensive and somebody will come along in a minute saying just get new seal with stainless ring which would be far less expensive especially if bought from seal supplier but you did say you would like to do it in one trip

I'm halfway through trying to fix the leaking pump on my Volvo MD 2010...
Nightmare getting the pump off, but just possible after a lot of bad language and bodily contortion. Now I have it at home. At first I tried pulling out the shaft from behind, but I've realised that it's better to attack the seal and o ring from the front. There was a cam and wear plate in front (or behind the impeller) which I had to hack off. I've now managed to tweezer out most of the rubber from the seal, but I think I've left behind the metal body from within the seal... Not 100% sure, so I'm waiting for the part to arrive before I hack anything else out...
In short it's an epic battle of man V pump. There are loads of useful films on YouTube, lots of exploded diagrams on parts websites and if I fix it, I'll be mighty pleased... Especially as new pumps are £260 ish...
Good luck!

Luckily the MD11 pump is far more basic no bearing for a start

Cheers guys, really appreciate all the info.

Hey Scottie, are you sure there are no bearings for this water pump? I thought mine was this one .

Guess it's safer to remove and the go after the parts eh?! Hopefully I can find everything here in Auckland.

Cheers

Sounds right. The seals face outwards and any water seepage is intended to be thrown out via the weep hole.

Apologies you are correct there are bearings the one you have identified looks correct

Just to add that I've finally got the seal out... I managed to get a thin skewer in through the drain holes and push/knock it out... Hopefully it'll be easier for you!

Will you need to replace the bearings if there is no play in the shaft?

I don't think your pump has ball race bearings. It might have a replaceable bush but the shaft might just run in the material of the casting.
