I recently purchased a 1977 International Folkboat that has an inboard Volvo Penta MD1.

I haven't owned a sailboat with an inboard diesel engine before, so I am just beginning to educate myself about maintaining it. I also purchased a Volvo MD2 for spare parts along with the boat.

I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a copy of the original owner's manual for the MD1. I have had some luck finding the "Workshop Manual" but wanted to begin with the actual "Instruction" book first, as the engine is currently in working order and just looking to understand the basic maintenance of the engine.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

It’s a very reliable and simple engine. From memory maintenance is
- change oil. I found that fully synthetic 0Wxx engine oil made it possible to use hand start
- wash out air filter with paraffin, soak in oil then let it drain for a couple of days before refixing ( if it’s the steel mesh type)
- check water pump impeller is intact
- it is raw water cooled so flush it out as best you can
-Change fuel filter (s) and otherwise leave the fuel injection system severely alone

Have aoil can with a flexible plastic nozzle on board. If it is hard to start then remove the air filter and put a single squirt of engine oil into the engine before turning it over. This will increase compression and get it going

This engine almost always stops with the inlet valve open. Get in the habit of hand winding it into compression as soon as you have stopped it

Thanks so much for the great replies! Extremely helpful. However, I noticed in the link a few pages are missing. Do you know of anywhere I might be able to find them?
Thanks again.
