Earlier this year after taking the boat out for a spin all seemed good till we got back to our berth. The port engine seemed to be making a knocking sound but it was running fine and starts straight away every time. So I got a chap in to take a look for me and he said it was coming from cylinder 6. When he cracked the injector the noise stopped so he swapped around the injectors but the noise stayed with no 6. Well I've now had the engine lifted out and sent off to be checked over but this is the puzzling bit. They ran it up in the workshop and it's purring like a kitten with no knocking what so ever. They invited me down to listen for myself. They checked all the valves and rockers etc and tested all injectors but can't find anything wrong.

What they have not done is drop the sump to look at the bearings but they are saying it really is unlikely to be the bearings on an engine that has only 1000hrs on the clock and to them its running fine, so why waste money.

I'm now thinking about the 290dp and maybe in the boat it was vibrating against something.

I just don't know really what to do so I'm now at the point of putting it back in the boat and hoping for the best.

If anyone on here has experienced or heard of this before then by all means reply as any thoughts would be welcome.

Used to have the same engine/drive -combo on a past boat. One summer the universal joint broke completely, I was actually driving the boat to the engineer's workshop when this happened. Anyway, the early symptoms were vibration (more pronounced when the wheel was turned to full lock) and subsequent abnormal sound that you could describe as knocking.

The sound obviously came from the joint area so it could be possible that your chap had that mixed up coming from the last cylinder if he was expecting a problem with the engine?

When was the last time rubberwear was changed and U/J etc checked for water ingress.
Would be my first simple and cheap action to trace problem?

Thanks all. Will inspect the universal joint for play etc and will report back. The bellows was done this time last year and are in great shape when we took the drive off with no water and the uni joint has got no rust on it whatsoever. But it's not to say there is not a prob.
The engine mount sagging is an interesting point though and one i would not have thought of so will look at that as well.

Sorry, like me then you have felt the pain, and found salvation.

I finally saw the light and was saved...:)

I have a trip coming up, and a choice of boats to do it on. One shaft drive, one stern drive. I costed the fuel and realised I would save £2000 in fuel costs for this one trip alone if I did it in the outdrive boat. Think I'll stick with my egg whisks thank you :)

What strange way to diagnose a fault I've never done a diagnosis that way around. Did someone talk you into engine removal ? Didn't anyone do a cylinder leakage test or remove the injectors and take them for testing prior to removal.
Sounds like you have a lot of unnecessary expense now in having it put back and hoping it's ok
In my nook engine removal is a last resort as many jobs can be undertaken in most boats while there still in the boat.
The KAD 42 is a fairly reliable engine, anything in the knocking dept is usually serious , I hope it's ok when it's put back.
I'd get the drive checked over and the universal joint, flywheel coupling and gears checked while its all in pieces.

Well impressed.

With marine diesel at about £1.00 a gallon and a claimed saving of
20 % over shafts thats a fuel bill of 10 K....where are you going ? :).

Re: Well impressed.

£1/litre or Gallon ?-if L
10,000 L is 154 hours at say 60 /L ish @25 knots that's 3800 miles est
That's a long trip over 6 days solid day and nght - less refuel stops .

20%? I don't think so. Shaft drive boat 1mpg. Outdrive boat 2mpg.

Swap the drives and se what happends, hmm I realise this might be difficult if you have taken one engine out already :-( Could it be the injection pump? I had a similar issue with a knocking sound also on a kad 42 that became very noticable when the engine was warm.It was the injector in the end. This sounded like a stronger diesel knock and I could also sense a distinct jolt on the high pressure line that had the faulty injector.

I also had a U/J failure on the same past boat. That knocking and vibration left no doubth that it was the outdrive.

Proves how un-mechanical I am, that's sounds ok to me for diesel. My engine has always made a loud noise like that I thought that was just because it was diesel. Sometimes ignorance is bliss
