Hi there I’m new to this forum and would really appreciate some advice please. (I’ve searched but can’t find an answer). Out at sea today at about 25 knots and one of twin engines packed up. No alarms, no lights, no temperature. Steering hydraulic also went.
Tried to restart, starter motor seemed to “spin” but won’t throw over engine. When back at berth starter motor wouldn’t even turn over.
Getting mechanic in but not sure if will need a whole recon engine, any idea of the cost and where to get one please? All ideas welcome! Thank you.

I was hoping he kad boys would be along but you could put a socket on the fly wheel to see if you can turn the engine , have you dipped the oil

Hi dipped oil all levels good no water in oil coolant doesn’t have oil in either checked props nothing wrapped around but didn’t have big enough socket with me so couldn’t check

Thank you for all your help this is much appreciated especially since new to boating do you rough cost if i have to rebuild or get recon agin thank you for your advise Chris

Earth strap on the block , and other battery connections , then alternator connections .
I ,am thinking checking the electrical side first if it wont spin , slow turning over etc .

Also have you changed the fuel filters recently? Thinking either a std blockage and you have run the batteries down trying to restart it or airs found it’s way in to the pump .If so it will need bleeding through.

More seriously you have a hydrolock. Fluid from a leaky charge air cooler gotten in a cylinder and locked that pot .” it just stopped “
Or the fluid is fuel from a injector giving up and hosing fuel thus filling it up to jam it .
It won’t move, turn over back at the dock like I think you are describing thus far ?

It might tomorrow or a few days time as the fluid weeps past the rings into the sump kinda freeing it up .
You might find residue in the sump oil or dipstick of water or excess fuel dilution depending on which fluid was responsible?

How ever severe damage can be done in the form of bending a rod or crank .In which case your rebuild enquires are relevant .Sorry I don’t know the answer to that one , short block .

But then again a roped wrapped round the props could also lock it up , hence the ^^^ advise to eliminate that and further advise to put a socket on the crank pulley and bar the engine , try on turn it over .This is quit easy with diesels when cold as the ring s don’t seal and gasses escape .
We have barred a 13 L 6 pot when cold with a 1 M breaker bar to do the valve lash .

Do please report back your findings .

Dont be surprised its not the engine and the drive that turns out to be the culprit. The upper gearbox can spit oil into the bellows and seize up if overheated for whatever reason. I had one go tight on me. Never got to the bottom of it as I junked it. If it's the engine 2nd hand they can be had for circa 12k GBP but that would be if a block went. They ,can be easily rebuilt. The rebuild kit is about 5k but wont include crank or head obviously if they have been damaged look for a scrappy like Coastal Rides for spares and have those rebuilt /skimmed etc. They may stock a few KADs, they were advertising them at the beginning of the year or thereabouts. Like all scrappies a single part can be good. A working assembly needs to be double checked, for peace of mind if nothing else.

Old Diesel engines only stop if they loose 2 things , air and fuel unless you have a sea fire system in which case it’s shut the engine down , if you have one place the switch in the override position.
