Volvo Penta EVC software upgrade issues when converting engines from DPH to IPS.

Good day everyone! My story is primarily addressed to Volvo Penta dealers or customers who know anything about the DPH - IPS conversion.
On my boat, the IPS500 engines with EVC-C system were installed, then the captain started the engines without oil, at the moment when the boat was in the process of maintanance and changing the engine oil. Both engines were very badly damaged.

At this point, a friend of mine was selling two of the same engines from his old boat with only 120 hours each. I bought these two D6 370AB with EVС-D engines from him and decided to upgrade the entire system from the EVС-С analog to EVС-D, new throttles with HCU and joysticks were purchased from the official dealer, new EVC-D steering motors were also purchased to upgrade IPS units, resolvers, new cover with speed sensor, new hydraulic valves and wiring from engines to IPS units. All of this has been installed. An official dealer came to upgrade the software and problems began, the old engines were previously used with DPH and it is impossible to update the ENGINE PCU with their chasis is to the software for working with IPS units, new motors are also without software, new handles are also without software. The old engines chassis number is EVC-C system, so I can't use it for the update either.

Can you tell me how I can update the transmission - engine configuration in my current chassis number?
Is it possible to get a new chassis number? What are my options? What to do? Help me please.

Old chassis number from my boat before the engine change:
VV006017798 UMS-S
Chassis number with DPH engines
VV030009/VV030008

Thank you guys!

I am in Thailand and official dealer in Bangkok say he cant do that for me. He also said that he had written to the Volvo Penta and received no response from them.

Good luck. I would suspect that Volvo are the only people who could answer this. The bill must have been eye watering for that lot. I assume there captain did not pay?

I assume you contracted to Volvo dealer to do this work? Confused of course by the second hand engines. I would have thought a rebuild would have been simpler and cheaper.

You are looking to integrate a load of stuff - engine management / IPS / joysticks etc that was not designed as one to work together in the first place so you may find this is actually not possible without changing more electronics

IPS gets a bad wrap on here. I am a member of various Volvo forums on facebook ( try Volvo Penta Victims for this question ). It is complex etc. Personally I was quite relaxed about IPS - but there more I read on Volvo Penta Victims there are ongoing resolver issues and some probably seem very hard to fix.

Can get Volvo to re-flash your ECU it to suit an EVC-D / IPS set up?

Perhaps this would need a new engine chassis / serial number?

Either way, I doubt you'll get much help here. The Facebook VP or IPS groups would have more experts who might be able to help.

Love this one .
Volvo Victims website.

Have had 3 boats powered by ancient Volvo Penta engines , probably a total of 3500 hours over 25 years.
Doubtful that any white coated Volvo agent would have been anywhere near any of them after the first owner or two..
One of the boats had 4500 hours when sold.
Only problem ever was sourcing a heater matrix.
Replaced an alternator or two and did break a gearbox. 48 hours to get new shaft for a 30 year old reverse gear. Not bad.

Electronics will be responsible for many cars entering the junk yard as they become obsolete and out of stock. I suspect boats especially IPs and similar will go the same way. They are now so complex that a man with s spanner can only fix a percentage of the issues.

emissions were responsible for electronic engines, but the other systems are somewhat self inflected.

I know several people who will not own things like a Range Rover out of warrenty as if it goes wrong the bill ( and delay ) is huge.

I don’t see an issue with an ips system Upto ( say ) 10 years but I really would not want to be the owner of an aging system that is a bit fussy anyway and can only really be fixed by Volvo and their computers. Even then I suspect like cars they will replace one part after another until the problem goes away.

rarely do I agree with Porto on this forum but old ips is really not a place anyone wants to be !

Friend has a boat which would suit us down the the ground and boasts everything our next boat needs to have , proper stairs, 3 cabins, island bed , 750 hours, well under 10 years old with modern bright interior and massive flybridge.
Could pick up the phone buy today at price around 20-25 % below similar sized craft (probably older) and in less good condition.
There is virtually nothing listed anywhere in UK at this size and price point.
Whats its problem from both a market and personal point of view ? ...........................its IPS of course.
