Volvo Penta Engine trouble

Hello to anyone that can help. My boat has been on dry land for 18 months and has a penta AQ211a engine that sounded nice when tested on my trailer, (for less than a minute to prevent overheat) but still would only start by spraying fuel into the carb. When I put it in the water to fully test I found it still would not start unless fuel was sprayed in to the carb, once it got going it cut out straight away below 2000 revs, also the right hand exhaust manifold was blocked.
The manifold is now clear and i have good water flow and temps, i have changed the plugs, rotor arm, dis cap and set the points. There is a good spark but the problem of starting is still there and it never ticks over.
The engine will only start by spraying fuel into the carb and the throttle has to be wide open for it to fire, when it does start it sounds awful, really bad, and then as you lower revs it cuts out.
I would really appreciate any help of where to go from here as I am now really stuck.

get a carb.overhaul kit,strip -clean and rebuild carb..
make sure you have good fuel supplie to the carb aswell..
and petrol in the tank!!

Manky stale fuel in the tank, gunge in the float bowl... All quite likely if she's stood for 18 months. Clean the carb and fill the bowl with fresh fuel as a starting point...

have you got 18 month old fuel in the tank?
If so, change it and flush through the line to the carb. It might not cure your problem, but it will definately help.

Thanks for your help I will start by getting the carb cleaned out, I must mention though the fuel is fresh, when she was launched again last week my wife put £100 worh of fuel in, not getting very far on it though and the kids were cross with Dad for ruining their weekend!!!! So the sooner I solve this the better my life will be!!!!!!

As said already, definately get that carb cleaned through.

There may be fresh fuel in the tank but it might be worth checking pickup and any filters along the way as they could well be gunged up too?

Thanks to all who helped, Carb cleaned engine running great again, Dads the hero. ( so my kids state)
Just a strong smell of exhaust fumes in engine bay from left side manifold, I assume manifold to head gasket worn, would I be correct?
