Anybody had experience with these engines in a 50 foot boat?
Anything to look out for approx 500 hours on a 10 year old boat?
Other boats I've also looked at have the D9s - 575
I would value the panels opinion

I have a pair of D-11-670's in a 12yr old 50 foot Princess. Sweet, quiet and smooth. What specifically would you like to know?

James.
Thanks James
Good to hear they are sweet, quiet & smooth. Any truth in the rumours the exhaust elbows rot through ?
Thanks
Tim

A boat of that age exhaust elbows corroding through would not be unreasonable.
My boat, not engines in question but VP stainless steel dry straight section then cast iron water injection exhaust elbows one failed at about 13 years and one a year later. Stainless corrosion and fracture injection bend corroded up restricting water flow and water back pressure so both changed.
One customer VP D12 with Halyard stainless injection bends changed them twice at about 6/7 years and again about 12/ 13 years , so about 6/7 years life. The cost is one thing but hey were to order each time (months), so short term patching and change to new later so twice the labour.

If I was buying a boat of that age , for an intended 5+ years, either buy two sets and hold them in stock or do a preemptive strike and change them out. They only fail when you use them , you could lose a summer holiday. Not a huge job to change.

This principle and time scales apply to any engine manufacturer.

D11 is a stretched D9 , same engine with longer throw crankshaft , generally an ok engine, it’s the gearbox you have to worry about and the flywheel drive plate .
This engine has massive amount of low down torque so the load on the gearbox is high .

I've had no problems thus far but time will no doubt tell. Mine have stainless elbows if that helps?

I've owned the boat for 2 years and done a couple of hundred hours (Total time ~600hrs). Top tip is to keep the hull and running gear clean as both fuel flow and performance suffer markedly when things get a bit grubby. I've also heard that they don't like running at displacement speeds (rpm) for too much of the time so I make sure to balance the slow running and the load running. On a recent long range coastal passage (60 hrs) at mostly displacement speed there was a bit of smoke when I loaded them up. This cleared after 5 mins of running at load. Always (always) make sure you can achieve rated rpm. Note that the shaft drive installations are rated to 2350rpm. This is different from the pod drive installs even though the engine is the same...

As for the gearboxes I'd assume that differs model (brand) to model? Mine have the ZF boxes.

J.

Thanks Bandit
May consider getting spares for preventative maintenance if I progress

Thank you explaining the D11 is a stretched version of the D9 is there anyway of checking the flywheel drive plates ?

Thank you J
60 hours coastal passage respect!
I will note the 2350rpm, The boat Im looking st has ZF boxes

A replies very much appreciated
Thanks
