Hi,

anyone know what cars share the same starter motor as the 121 "amazon" series of volvo.

I have a very knackered starter and am looking for a replacement.

don't intend to by new (i could blame it on the credit crunch, but i'm just tight!)

My old unit is too far gone to rebuild, i've done this 3 times and it's just gone too far.

other engines that list this starter are:

VP 115
VP 140
VP145
280D
170A/B

unfortunately i'm not aware of the cars that provide the base engine.

thanks in advance, steve.

Don't buy a VP one. I got stung like that for almost 400 notes. Its the same as the bosch one fitted to cars apart from a bit of heat shrink around the solinoid. The part number of the starters both marine and automotive are the same.

Buy a starter for 60'ish quid and stick your "marine" solinoid on it. I must have had mug/muppet or C**** written on my forehead when I bought a vilevo one! I wouldn't mind but its still a Bosch in a vilevo box, talk about ripoff!

The 145 is a B23 block by the way The 115 is a B18 so look at volvo 140/240's

Is the 115, which to my understanding is the same as the 130, except the 130 has two carbs not a B20.
I've got a 115 and the block has B20 marking on it.

Although I'm far from an expert so I could be wrong.

Cheers Barry, I wondered if the starter was common on the OHV and OHC engines... makes my problem of sourcing a used unit a little easier.

of course i'll rebuild it anyway, and i'm even putting the shrink sleeve around the solonoid, for waterproofing rather than spark prevention though.

Oh yeah.... and why you no reply to my PM's you tart?

The B18 was an earlier version, fitted to the P1800 and earlier "amazons" there was a twin SU setup, upping the power by 10-15hp.

the B20 was a 2 litre, but shared the same block casting, also available as a single or twin SU version.

the VP 130 is the B20 with downdraught carbs on a special manifold... i've got spare carbs and a manifold.... must remember to ebay them.

just to confuse matters, there was also a 6 cylinder jobby, but i think that was short lived as a boat engine as it was soon replaced by the lighter and more economical (HAAA!) four cylinder OHC.... like what BarryH has got.

Anyway... anyone want a Sunseeker S20 with an AQ 130 in it??

Steve.

When i needed a starter for my AQ110a, i just popped down to my local breakers with the old starter and said "I need one of these" he disapeared for a minute and came back with a replacement !

type of carburettor. can't remember what SU stands for. but it's a constant depression type as fitted to mini's and most of the leyland cars.

Stromberg were another manufacurer of the CD (constant depression carb as fitted to lots of european vehicles.

The benefit of this type of carb is that the venturi (which causes the depression to meter the fuel into the engine) is constantly changing depending on the amount of vacuum in the inlet manifold, this allows the mixture to be mixed better with the air and thus aids fuel consumption.

As opposed to a fixed venturi carb which relies mainly on air speed through the carb to do simmilar. in boat applications the choke is sometimes not used on fixed venturi carbs, the enrichment is provided by a couple of "pumps" on the throttle levers to squirt fuel into the engine by using an accelerator pump, something not fitted or needed on a CD carb. these will need a strangler type choke fitted to increase the vacuum before the main jet.

then there's the VV type..... need i go on?

It's a type of carburettor that has a screw top that you put thin oil into.

dunno if this helped.

steve.

Thanks for that.

Never realised there was so much to em...that's what happens when you grow up in the injection era. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks again, I feel ejurmerkated.
