my Volvo AD30 will not turn off at the ignition switch. I have to turn it off on the engine. Does anyone have any ideas?
 
I'd start by checking the wiring between the ignition switch and the stop solenoid (towards the back of the hp injection pump). It could be that a wire has dropped off / broken.
 
Purple wire from loom, maybe loose 16 pin plug at either dash or engine end, or faulty stop solenoid, run a live wire from battery positive to spade terminal on solenoid if it stops its the solenoid, maybe it even sticks as there is a spring and plunger inside, take care when removing not to loose the spring and make sure no debris enters the pump housing.

How car like! All the diesel boats I have had have used a fuel cut off separate from the ignition. Turning off the ignition key will simply destroy the alternator. Ahh, there's the rub isn't it? MoBo'ers need the simple approach . . .

Turning the key to "off" doesn't stop the engine: you have to hold it in the "stop" position to stop the engine.

Makes sense to me. Or do you use a cranking handle to start yours?

I have used a cranking handle indeed, but my new engine is sadly not equipped with one. I just hope I don't need to start it with flat batteries somewhere. I have heard that boats do not "bump start" well.

My boats have always had a seperate fuel cut off. Previous one was a mechanical lever operated by bowden cable, Current one has a push button so I guess it is an electronic relay.

"Stop engines" produces a buzzer alarm to remind me to turn off the ignition before I flatten the batteries. I had no idea that MoBo's used the same techniques as cars where turning ignition switch cuts fuel &, presumeably has a short delay on the ignition.

That's why I like these fora. I learn summat every time I come here.

On a boat with petrol engines: turning to "off" cuts the ignition.

On a KAD32 diesel, it's not quite the same: turning to "off" does nothing apart from powering down some instruments and controls. To stop the engine you have to hold the key against spring pressure in the "stop" position until it stops - this operates the stop solenoid on the fuel pump.

I was thinking of my diesel car, I simply turn off the ignition to stop the engine. I suppose that powers down the Injector ECU to cut the fuel supply. The issue is that cutting off the ignition without stopping the engine will blow the alternator.

BTW, apologies to OP for nicking this thread. Nothing personal, just interested.
 
I did hold the ignition key in stop position. As I have two of these things and the one stops but the other one doesn't I suspect that something is wrong with the wiring somewhere. Looks like a weekend of lying on my back under the console.
