Volvo Penta . 255HP 60C. Spares.

Any idea what caused the failure?
Not a complex fix If you have the tools. Will you do the work yourself?

Not my boat. A fellow club member on our moorings.
The engine is in bits.
Debate now as to draw liners and repair or find a replacement lump.
Need to bear in mind age and value of boat ?

Probably need to assess main and big-end bearing journal wear as well. No good doing all that work for it to collapse in a heap again with low oil pressure issues.
anyone doing exchange rebuilt engines?

Go online VP parts catalog and check part number for liner sets if it starts 8 or 38 it is not same as truck parts
There used to be rebuild kit that eased the hurt cost wise but the bearings were all std if you require us cost extra

Thanks for all the replies.
The skipper has been boating for the thick end of 50 years and not a stranger to rebuilding engines.
Funding the repair is the least of the concerns, just a case of seriously thinking about the available options, before heading down any particular path.
...........and for some reason or other there is no urgent rush to get the boat underway at the moment.

Difficult one. Let us know what was decided please. I love my D4-225. Maybe a little underpowered but I need to slow down anyway. Still need to know the best route for a repower just in case.

According to Volvo Penta cylinder liner kit for TAMD60B and C (including piston) is not available anymore. Only available for TAMD60A. Cylinders liners are the same for A, B and C model but you will find differences on the piston combustion chamber diameter and depth (not the same). I guess you have a twin installation. Which makes harder to take a decision as you need twice engines to be the same. Try to find one of the following references first of all: 275066 or 275389 (cylinder liner kit). Send email to dealers.. maybe one have in stock...

I don’t think the D4 can be rebored. Gonna take advice on that.
It can be fitted with new liners it’s the fact oversize pistons are not available. We live in a throw away society so the manufacturers would rather you buy a short block from them than Allow outsiders to supply parts and services that they make nothing from . Sewn up is the word .
