Hello,
I am new to this forum. Here because I got such a great deal on a Volvo Penta 200 (20 hp) outboard. Looks like I might be one of very few to own one of these in the US. I am pretty good at finding things on the web, but this is a challenge. I am looking for any information on these motors I can get. I am a sailor (25 years) and this motor thing is new to me (what kind of lube in lower unit, fuel mixture...). To make things worse for this sailor turned motor guy is I bought a motor no one knows anything about in the states.
If there is a better forum to post this to I would gladly do that. In the mean time, I appreciate any help.

There are still some of these around ... never got a big following, and I thought they stopped production of these in the late 70's ....or perhaps some time in the 80's. Volvo Penta, Archimedes Penta and Crescent was of that era...

I'd try Billingham Marine, who seems to know a lot about outboards and apparently also have some knowledge about these (a guy in our marina have a Archimedes Penta 360 and seems to be getting spares from them...)...

That's an old engine. As DM1 said, they were badged as Crescent then as Archimedes Penta, then latterly they swapped the white piant for blue and were badged Volvo Penta. Heyday was the 1970s and early 80s. They were never a premium/high end product though - Mercury/OMC/Yamaha were always considered better. I'd expect lower unit lube could be changed using mercury/quicksilver, yamaha, evinrude branded oil. Fuel mix was 50:1, mixed in the tank, for most models. Spares might be awkward to find esp in US - they never sold in big numbers like Mercury/Yamaha/OMC, and what they did sell was more Europe than US

What others have said!
I had (still have, but dont use) a smaller VP51 outboard. I cannot remember for certain when VP dropped out of the outboard market but agree round about 1980 (mines a 1977 model)

There are usually a few miscellaneous spares on eBbay in the Uk and Bill Higham has already been mentioned.

A couple of US forums that might be of interest to you

http://forums.iboats.com/ and possibly

http://www.marineengine.com/

both of whom have an "Other Outboard brands" forum

As suggested fuel mix was probably 50:1 but may have been 40:1. These days you'd use a 2 stroke outboard engine oil to TCW3 specification.

Almost certainly just an ordinary outboard gear oil in the gearcase but check regularly for signs of water ingress. New seals may be difficult to get!

Sorry but I would not want an old VP outboard as a gift ... I tried to give mine away but it came back!
By comparison plenty of even older Johnson and Evinrude engines still in use in the US with spares still available.

The old Volvo Penta outboards are getting rare also here in Sweden but there are still a few in use. They are good machines but spares are starting to be a problem. I have a 20 hp just like yours and it runs really well! Fuel-oil mixture is 50:1 and the lower gear uses EP 90 outboard gear oil. I have some litterature on it so if there some data you need I might be able to help.

Good afternoon;
I also have one of these outboards and am having some issues with the power it is putting out. it runs fine but when you go to full throttle it is probably only putting out the same as a 10hp outboard. Also I recieved the motor with out the tiller so do not have the correct wiring harness or diagram for the electric start. The negative and positive leads are there, but the rest is missing. however the kill switch wiring is there.. There is one connector that has a red and white wire connected and one with a yellow and white wire connected. do you happen to have a copy of the wiring diagram by any chance? any help would be greatly apreciated.
thank you
Jon
