I have a Volvo Penta 2030D and have always used genuine Volvo Parts

Looking to change the oil again this year and noticed that Parts4Engines sell Perkins Oil Filters for £6 each (plus postage)

In view that the Volvo engine started life as a Perkins does anyone use these instead. A considerable cost saving, but little compared to the overall cost of running a boat.

I can't think the genuine Volvo ones are any different due to the marine environment or different usage

Whats this forums thoughts, thanks

I just bought Mann oil filters and air filters for my Volvo Penta kad32 engine from GSF car parts
They even have Volvo Penta written on the box

I bought a pattern fuel filter as part of a service kit for my D1-20 and it didn't fit. Outer cannister was too wide and it fouled on part of the block.

Very annoying as I had to go and buy a Volvo one from local chandlery con merchants for £28! (Couldn't leave boat where I'd moored and damaged old one getting it off)

That sounds like the fault of the retailer who supplied the service kit , not really the fault of the filter manufacturer ?

MANN are excellent filters and often are the manufacturer of the OEM filters themselves.

Parts for engines sell the genuine perkins filters so i would have no qualms about fitting them. (Volvo barely disguises the fact its perkins engjne)

I used to buy all my renewable parts for engines from a motor factors shop that was used by taxi drivers. It was also patronised by mechanics from car repair garages and one of them told me that you could buy cheap filters that were as much use as a container filled with bog roll. The secret was to only buy brand names like Crossland, Champion, Mann, Lucas etc.

All of these were actually very cheap bought from the motor factors than from a main dealership. Filters for Volvo and other engines are only repainted filters from a reputable manufacturer and can be obtained in their original form much cheaper. The trick is finding out what the equivalent code is for one brand manufacturer. You can then find equivalent codes for other manufacturers.

When someone designs an engine, they often use parts which are already available.
They want a filter with a certain capacity, they pick one from a catalogue.
There are only so many combinations of thread, sealing ring and body dimensions.
But sometimes cross reference parts do vary slightly, body dimensions, or as I found, the original for a bike has an octagonal end which fits a special tool, the 'equivalent' does not.
Sometimes there are multiple different filters of the same thread and sealing ring which will fit a certain car engine, there's space for a bigger shell diameter perhaps, or a longer body.
So once I've found the Mann part number that fits, I tend to stick with that brand, or buy something which the filter co says fits the engine.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I shall now convert to a well know make alternative. There is no need for some of Volvo's prices, plus their carriage cost is 50% more than most. Just need to find an alternative fuel filter (engine side)

Hi D&T, I have a Volvo 2010 and the filter is the same as the Toyota Prius. I will post the reference no. if I can find it. Your filter is probably the same one. Available from GSF, Halfords or EBay.

OMG, I think I would rather pay the Volvo premium rather than having one from Toyota Prius on my boat :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
