I get a release of pressure when I undo the dipsticks, there are no breathers on these boxes.
Maybe paul will be able to confirm if this is the norm

Hello,
Thanks for the pointers. Ok so raw water cooled I can check that out with a hose then when all disconnected? Always change the impellers as part of the yearly service.
Just about to get the tools out typical first sunny day of our break. Sort of good news about the box pressure and I thought that I had better say that the other box that does not hiss does have a slight leak on the output shaft so perhaps thats taking the pressure away? See how we go but if I fix the broke box then perhaps its time to sort out the output seal on the good one.
Time to invert myself again and get the darn thing out so will advise on progress.
Cheers, Colin.
Hello,
Thanks for that yes good call for the sake of an hour its worth checking the other output flange.
So we went to it at 11:30 am and the box was loaded into the estate car at 16:00 so a lot longer than I expected but she is out. We had our problems had to disc cut two prop bolts off and the lower water pipe bolts 2x10mm would not budge.
In the end I bit the bullet and cut the pipe and so I hope I can join it with some flexi? (Its attached to the exchanger the same way so dont see why not!!!). And it actually looks like 22mm copper pipe but I may be wrong.
Box lifted out ok got under it and a bit of a grunt and she lifted out in stages.
Yes easy to pop a hose into the water pipes I think they are ok. I have quickly put a scope under the boat to look at the prop and There is a bit of a shadow and im wondering if I picked something up? Intend to try and fix the box and have her lifted to check before I attempt again to head South.
Tomorrow begin the strip down I am at the mother in laws so have limited tools but hoping I will be able to have a verdict by the end of the day. Then its PAUL. Help..........
Cheers again, Colin
Indeed - when the shaft nut came undone the output shaft became partially free floating which wrecked the main support bearing, but fortunately no other damage was done. That's when I wrote up the overhaul manual because I couldn't find one anywhere. We routinely write manuals for the various compressors we overhaul by a similar process of reverse engineering, I didn't see this gearbox any anything different. I expect the MS4 will be similar to the MS3B.If the MS-4 is the same as the MS-3, it just has a raw water flow through 2 pipes that connect to the side of the box - I see no reason why you can't check flow through there with a hose pipe.
If you have a leak on the other one at the output, you might want to check the nut holding the flange on. I had a similar situation, and the nut was loose. I also heard from another forum member on here (Superheat6K?) that his nut came undone and it damaged the box.
You only need a 12mm socket to remove the rear housing , you can see all the gears once that's out , then maybe have a good cry.

Hello,
Output shaft is off and yup just a load of 12mm bolts cool thanks. All the cogs look ok. When I engage gears on the selector the top cog turns but the bottom one doesn't. I guess its a snapped shaft or is there a cone "thingy" on that shaft somewhere? Had one on my old sailing boat that u had to adjust.
I guess its the bottom hatch off next looks like four 14mm bolts fingers crossed.
Cheers, Col.
Cone clutch for a guess, have you manually shifted the gearbox at the control lever side of gearbox.
Drain the oil and see what colour it is.
Get the box out and bring it to me , I've many scrap parts from various boxes for parts.
Hi volvopaul would you have a gear set for a ms4 1.94/1 ratio please
