Volvo MS3C gearbox repairs

noise

Hi,
I had a boat with inboard engine and I remember I had similar problem. I could even feel that noise (shaking the boat!) and it turned out to be a loose cog which was moving freely.

To make sure it is an engine problem not something to do with your prop shaft etc. observe the engine when you change the gear (forward/reverse). If the engine suddenly shakes then most probably something is wrong within the gearbox...

As someone mentioned, high idle speed could also cause this problem.

Many thanks for all your suggestions. I have tried slowing the tick over, but I think I need to locate someone who is known to deal with this type of problem.

Thanks again, Ivor.

Hi Everyone,

Its crane out time and I am seeking a recommendation of someone who can advise, or preferably carry out repairs on a Volvo MS3C gearbox. The gearbox actually drives faultlessly and silently when in motion, but when engaging into forward or reverse there is a slight clonking noise so I am guessing there is something worn.

Can anyone recommend a name, phone number or email address of someone who could best relate to this particular problem.:(

Many thanks,

Ivor.

I am not an expert on these boxes but it sounds to me that there is not a problem, the clonking is a sign of positive engagement, typical of the type.

VP will confirm one way or the other.

:pThanks for everyone's responses, I have just been notified by a volvo penta specialist that this is perfectly normal for 'this type' of gearbox.

Thanks one and all,

Ivor D.
