It broke today and I can see its sheered off just before the engine end where it attaches to the engine stop lever. I can't see how it attaches and wanted to know if anyone can tell me if I am going to need a new cable or if I can simply take off the broken cable end from the leer and re attach the existing cable? An exploded diagram of the stop lever would be helpful if any one knows where I can view one. Thanks in advance for any help.

You might need to shorten the outer cover. I have done this. Don t forget that the stop end might have to be left with some slack to allow the speed lever to move if it works the same lever as the speed control as on an MD2 etc

Zoomable exploded diagrams http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-explodedview-7742220-27-15015.aspx for MD5A and B or http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-explodedview-7742220-27-15015B.aspx for MD5C

But now not so sure if I can fix it without replacing the cable.

I found that Volvo seemed to have stop stocking some shorter lengths and so were looking a lotsa money for a 3 metre replacement.
I suspect someone here may have a surplus INNER cable as often that is all you need.

I agree that from the piccies Vic sent you possibly have crimped end fittings and this will make it more difficult to shorten the outer
however they may not be crimped so double check as you may be able to unscrew one of the outer fittings and shorten the outer sleeve.

Yes Volvo Motortech just confirmed £50.14 for the cable!!

Actually not that ridiculous I seem to remember a few years ago their prices were crazy...but now it appears they are just expensive!!

Volvo did however confirm that the end does not have any ball joint or similar so I may be in luck to do a 'budget fix'; only thing is how long will it last as the cable is obviously on its way out (I'll lubricate it and tidy it before re-assembly...fingers crossed!)

Thanks for your advice.

Wondered if you can shorten the outer ( by the same amounts that's broken off the inner). Re-thread the broken inner and refit the end fitting.

Maybe be able to make something up with a motor cycle bowden cable but may need a spring at the engine end to pull a more flexible cable back

Dunno about Volvo, but the stop cable on my Yanmar was a very basic thing. Unlike the throttle, it's a one-way Bowden cable, not a morse cable. You can buy such cables, intended for remote operation of fire extinguishers and battery switches in racing cars, for three or four quid on eBay. The same sellers have end ferrules designed to replicate the crimped kind, but held with a little set screw.
