Thanks

Thanks for pointing out that there are two types. I have taken a photograph and will check. But possibly I should post the picture and maybe you would be kind enough to help me identify it as I wont' know if the other is larger or smaller. Thanks again

I can't help with identifying the gearbox but the seals ought to have a number on them. It does rather require their removal first. Hopefully a specialist can identify a suitable replacement. It's been some time since I last tried it but oil seals were found for a 1923 motorcycle. The same in form, fit and function as the originals, just better materials and quality. They were still in the bike when it was sold, ten years later.

The parts diagrams can be found at http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-schematics-MarineDieselEngines.aspx

They should enable you to ID the gearbox and the parts you require.

I think its an MS type but I did not know they were water cooled

The MS2 gearbox, which is water cooled, is listed with the MD11 engines

Puzzled by the age you say. The MD2B was produced from 1970 to 1975... that would make it older than 33 years.
MD11C was produced from 1975 to 1981 then the MD11D until 1983

However owners manuals, if you do not have one, can be found at http://www.volvopenta.com/volvopent...lication_search/pages/publication_search.aspx

There is a workshop manual at http://www.bluemoment.com/downloads.html That covers the RB and MS gearboxes.

The shaft seal is the usual culprit and is quite big. it actually sits on the major diameter of the coupling.

This seal can be hooked out from the rear and a new one inserted without
stripping anything. I have even heard of folk cutting the new seal with a razor saw so as not to disconnect the shaft..

If we can find the size of the seal you will get one from any bearing/seal
supplier rather than pay volvo prices.

I have one on my boat so shall see if I can find it and measure it.

Bilgdiver and other helpful repondents Thank you very much for you insightful replies.
This engine was sold with the hull to the original owner of the Rival 34 shown in my video. It was new in 1973. This fantastic forum and its members are giving me hope.

MS box with reduction gear

Yes it is water cooled if reduction gear version same box ws fitted to several engines around this time. MD1/2/3B MD5 MD6 and MB10 petrol and their later versions front end of he box varied .
There is a weak point in the reduction gear as the casing is thin where the large 7" approx bearing sits in which the reduction gear runs
There is a seal and later a dust cover was added
Watch out as there are both oil and water drain plugs
The red gear housing is prone to frost damage and can prove an engine breaker financially
The crankshaft on engines with MS boxes is plugged but with the RB box is an oil jet .

Rear Gearbox Oil Seal

Volvo P/N 942950-7

Seal Dimensions

OD..............120 mm

ID Shaft.......100 mm

Width...........12 mm

The seal is metal cased and has a wire spring to energise the lip seal.

The Volvo Pn seal has the lip right at the back of the seal.
If this has made a groove on the coupling OD then it might be a good idea
to get an double lipped oil seal which would bear on unwarn OD.
