Hello everyone. I found threads on here really useful regarding the Perkins/MD22 and Austin Montego engine. I have a normally aspirated (non turbo) MD22 inboard in my newly acquired 1995 Moody. I'll be amazed if its ever had a cambelt change, so would like to do so. I found the parts for engines site excellent for decent quality alternatives to genuine Volvo, was planning to buy a belt kit (cambelt ,tensioner and idler) and a new water pump. Any recommendations on here on who I could use to install local to Plymouth ? I'm very mechanically minded and normally do my own maintenance, have rebuilt engines in the past but have never done a cambelt. Just wondered if anyone could recommend someone to either help me do it or just do whole job, Not keen on using google for the answer in case I regret it.
Thanks in advance

There was an article in PBO 520 , April 2010, by Stu Davies aka skipper stu and hacker ( or whatever it is he calls himself now) on changing the belt in an MD22
He described the procedure pretty well but unfortunately y gave no torque settings and only described his method of setting the tension by feel.

Maybe someone who has the article and is prepared to ignore copyright issues could scan it for you (I don't have a scanner) but unfortunately as a new member we cannot PM you.

I did it myself. I am an engineer, but not a motor mechanic, but I didn't find it difficult, although initially I tensioned the belt a little too much. It let me know by whining. I would certainly recommend renewing the circulating pump at the same time. I only found out about that recommendation later, when my pump failed, (in a very inappropriate place and time). Worth seeing a service manual, or as VicS suggests, a back copy of the article in PBO,

There is a workshop manual here

Thanks Vic and Norman, really appreciated. I've got the official Volvo manual, had a read and I feel ok having a go, I think the only thing worrying me is getting the crank pulley off. Will I need a puller ?

I keep qualified rights so I can send the unedited article to those who want it.
PS you do yourself no favours by using the slightly snotty tone when describing me and my methods. For those of us in the real world who can do real stuff it is not an issue to set a belt tension or tighten bolts up. For those who want to go down that route the workshop manual is freely available courtesyof Mr Google

No you do not need a puller. The removal is described earlier in the manual.
It has four small screws securing it to the cam belt sprocket and a big bolt in the centre bolting it to the crankshaft This one is pretty tight ( 180 Nm ) so you'll need a bit of muscle/ extra leverage but if you read the manual you will find that it is not necessary to remove the pulley anyway

Why ? The crank pulley doesn't need to be removed.

There is a big difference between Googling answers and parroting workshop manuals, and having actual real World experience. I have to regularly remind him of this in electrical threads. When you've adjusted one old Worlde Perkins belt............. :)

I had a couple of jobs done by Mount Batten Boathouse in Plymouth a year ago. I found them very helpful, practical and happy to discuss what they were doing with me - I was able to respectfully look over their shoulders and ask questions. I think the name of the guy I particularly liked was Clive, but the boss (Gavin?) was just the same too.

You don't need to remove the crank pulley.

Tool-wise, you will need:-

2 x 6.5mm drill bits (to use for the camshaft and flywheel lock holes (you put the shank end in the hole, not the fluke end).
2 x m6 screws (to put through the pump pulley to lock it

With these fitted, the engine is locked at TDC, so nothing can move.

Then you just need two allen keys to undo the bearings and release the belt.

You can get to the water pump to replace it without removing the crank pulley. You just have to work around the plastic cover.

I have an article on how to do this, that I wrote for the Bavaria Association yearbook. It's too big to upload here and I can't message you as you are a new member of the forum, but if you message me with your email address, I can email it to you.
