MD22L_A is the engine with the water pump driven by a cam
MD22L_B is the engine with the water pump driven by a belt
These engines have a design fault where a little diesel drips down onto the cylinders when stopped. Then on start up in cold conditions the blue smoke is very prominent for a short while. Apparently there is a fix for this which i have not done. I would run the engine under load for a while and give it some welly after it has properly run in
We are talking about the fresh water pump at the front of the engine, not the raw water pump at the rear. Injectors don’t drip when stopped, if they do, the nozzles need replacing. Skilled specialists can reseat the needles in the nozzles using jewellers rouge or Brasso but realistically changing them is the best option.
As I have said before, the only way to get the correct ones is to remove the old ones and get the part number off them. You need to dismantle the injectors to do this. It’s printed on the base of the nozzle.

I have an Oceanis 411 fitted with a MD22L-b, it started smoking badly and a lot of diesel or oil is coming out of exhaust, I have had the injectors and the injection pump reconditioned and I have had the cylinder head reconditioned and skimmed slightly, the compression seems Ok and there is no signs of wear in the bores, I am at a loss to trace the problem. this all happened after a diesel bug event, threw away the affected diesel cut holes in the top of the tank and cleaned it out refilled the tank and added a strong dose of Marine 16 bug remover and the conditioner. I am now considering a complete rebuild or a new engine, the MD22 has done less than 2000 hours.

any ideas or comments?

We have an MD22 on our boat. You could also check and clean the PCV valve. Ours needed replacement and significantly cut down the amount of smoke the engine emitted. Just a thought 🤔.

Did you actually replace it, and if so, how and where did you get a replacement?

I took one apart, basically a diaphragm operating a “valve” to stop oily stuff getting in to the intake. Unobtainable now. You can peel back the edges and open it to check the diaphragm, it’s probably shagged.
I did use a simple vw ball valve type at one time but reverted back to a second hand one I got hold of. If you are skilled you could get some material and make one?

Hi, thanks for your response, I have not been looking at this place for a while, I am busy and disgusted with the engine, can I give a wee bit of history: I was changing the diesel filter and found the bug (again)so I cleaned out the tank and threw away the fuel, refilled the tank with a full dose of Marine 16. that was the start of the smoke and the sheen on the water, took some advice and as a result had the injectors rebuilt, no difference, then had the injection pump sent to a specialist who checked it and said it was working properly, then thought if the head was removed the valves and bores could be checked, so I had that done, the head was apparently ok but I asked if the guides, valve seals and the seat angles could be done so it was skimmed for being straight and refitted, on refitting the smoking has reduced but there is still a sheen on the water at over 2000RPM. when the head was off I checked the bores by putting 150ml of diesel down each bore and after about half an hour took the diesel out and measured the quantity, I got about 135ml out, I thought that was a good result as I would loose some in the ring lands and in the piston recess. I have had the compression checked and is acceptable, the engine starts and runs well.
I am am a loss to know the reson, currently I am trying to check the injection timing with a dial gauge, I am an expert in replacing the timing belt having done it three times in six months.

Has anyone ever had similar

Do the simple things again. How much oil does it burn in a season?
It’s normal for them to smoke a little.
Let it tickover and crack the injector nuts one by one. Does the engine slow down at each one? If so it’s normal.
If it doesn’t on one of them then there is an issue with that cylinder.
If all is good, crack on and use it!
