My engine has overheated and seized. I'm fairly sure the initial problem was oil pressure and not cooling water. The oil light was on for about 10 mins before any sign of overheating - which happenned very quickly in the space of less that a minute. I have managed to get it turning again now - though it sounds very strained. I've been told its probably bottom end bearings and in any case needs taking apart to investigate.

Anybody got spares? or even the whole engine that they want rid of?

Its got to come out of a Westerly Centaur - any advice welcome. Cheers

I've got one (or may be one and 3/4 if it hasn't been disposed of)

The one was running 2 years ago when removed - stored in a shed since (just engine I kept the sail drive). You don't say where you are - but its in Pembrokeshire

Hello Pembrokeshirepromise
Can I ask why you removed it / what have you replaced it with?
Mine has a gearbox + straight shaft - I assume the engine is the same and just bolts on to whatever?
Do you want anything for it? How much?
I'm in Cardiff, so not too far to come.

I Imagine the shaft version is just a different gearbox - but have no hands on experience with these.

As to why I removed it - preventitive really. When cruising I sail with young family and didn't want an issue. As I'm sure its an old engine, the cooling channels fur up and need clearing out from time to time to prevent them getting hot. It leaked a little oil (but then so does the new one!) - cosmetic issue rather than leaking enough to need it to be topped up with any frequency.
No cold starting - which for winter racing gave an extra bit of excitement to a Sun morning - though I have to say it never failed me.

I replaced it with a Beta 28 - quieter, cleaner, easier to start - can't say I regret doing it

no cold starting? - doesn't it have one of those cold start buttons (not sure what it actually does)? Mine is on the back (aft) of the engine by the fuel injection pump. It has a small spring under it that releases when the throttle is returned to the upright / neutral position. - it is always a pig to get to, but it worked.

Yes it had that (which just adds an extra dollop of diesel in) - so if you count that as cold starting yes it has it. Personally I considered it a way to generate a smoke screen if you tried it a couple of times!

Seriously - its fine in summer - but when temperature is hovering around 0 or below I reckoned it struggled - and no substitute for glow plugs on a modern engine. Could probably have retrofitted some sort of flame thrower - but wnet for the new engine instead.
