Volvo leg trim prob.

Had a major 240hr service a couple of weeks ago - the one where they lift out, service the leg and change the bellows. Cost an eye watering £1k plus (for a single KAD 43 at Volvo main agent.

Tried to take the boat out for a little blast to blow the cobwebs off today - horror -leg won't trim in below 5 on the gauge.

It works fine throughout the "beach" range ie. 40 down to 5 - but won't trim within my usual operating range of plus 3 down to minus 3.

I've checked the leg is moving up at the top of the beach range and the hydraulics sound normal.

Anybody seen this?

Is it save to operate for long trimmed so far out?

is the leg in it's proper position. or is the gauge just not calibrated.
I once had a service where gauge wasn't calibrated, and didn't show correct position, leg trim was actually working fine.

Didn't bother me as I trim by feel not gauge

Hard to be sure, but my impression is that it's not running for a long enough time to cover the full range. Also it's not making the stalling noise it normally makes at the end of its range. Very odd.

Simple answer. get someone to look at the leg while you operate it. Ignore gauge. If it's moving full range correctly, then gauge needs calibrating. If it's not moving full range, tell em they need to fix it.

To be on safe side, don't take it far until you know.

However, iff the thing was only operating in beach range you'd have known about it!!!! Huge spumes of spray from behind transom like a surface drive would be a big give away, as would inability to gain planing speed.

Since it's still under warranty I'm having the service agents pick it up tomorrow.

I didn't take it out of the river so I don't know how it would have performed at speed.

Most probably the leg is operating correctly. However on top of the leg is a short arm with teeth on it which locates into a cog. At one end of the arm is a screw, remove the screw, centre the leg visually and fit arm back making sure gauge reads 0. Two minute job.

I had a similar problem with my 290 DP. The leg was moving normally but
the guage would not display a consistent reading (kept stopping on a random
number). Adjusting the cog's position on the arm didn't change things.

The fault was finally traced to the sensor (potentiometer ???) above the cog
not translating the rotational movement into consistent guage readings.

A pain to replace as the sensor is located inside the transom shield and is difficult
to get to.

If the leg/gauge trim position indicator was working fine before the main dealer serviced your craft, then take it back and tell them!
What would you do if it was a motor car and something was not right when you picked it up from the garage?
I'm sure that by fitting new bellows and what ever else they have done on the leg arrangement, it's quite possible that the T.P.I has become disturbed in some way, and has other forumites have correctly said it's not a big job to put right, however if the fault lies with the dealership then have them check it out.

Just heard back from the yard.

You were all pretty well spot on. Whoever refitted the leg forgot to reset the toothed gizmo that drives the indicator.

Apparently they corrected it afloat with an electrical adjustment inside the boat - presumably the potentiometer.

Often as not the sensor in the leg was not re-installed back in the correct position. This is a common mistake and easily rectified.
