No but my 41 leaked all summer till I thought bugger it and added leak stop (Rad-Weld) to the system.
Cured in five minutes.
It might not be in the official Volvo guide book but its effective
and for a quid a time its 000000000000% cheaper and quicker
than a mechanic.
I've heard the head gaskets on a batch of early KAD42 engines were 'faulty' causing coolant to leak, although the problem would mainly show after the first 20 to 40 hours. However, I am also starting to hear that if the gaskets didn't blow early on, they would simply leak (weep) while under high power, causing streaking on the block, depositing coolant in the bilges whislt emptying the coolant bottle! This weeping would gradually deteriorate over time.
So, given mine have been weeping for ages and ages and I've only just found what appears to be the reason, I am about to have the heads removed and gaskets replaced, so any comments from readers would be welcomed.
PS - I've clocked 700 hours on the engines.
PPS - having said the gaskets were faulty, all I have been told is that they were replaced with another make/model (?) of gasket, and that since then, no problems.
From memory the early 42 series suffered from a lot of problems,MBY had one self destruct in their princess 35, make sure the proper man is dooing the job, I have spoken to other people in my trade about this problem, make sure the liner seals are ok and that the liners have not moved, as this will lead to further problems in the future, these kad engines take a lot of keeping cool at high revs so make sure the heat exchangers are clear from scale and debris, apart from this a call to Volvo may bring to light any other problems.
