Had some Kad 42 engines checked and report as follows
  1. The port side heat exchanger/oil cooler end caps are showing signs of leaking and require attention
  2. The starboard side heat exchanger/oil cooler end caps are showing signs of leaking and require attention
  3. The starboard side exhaust injection elbow to turbo connection is heavily corroded and requires investigation and repair.
  4. The underside of the of the after cooler is covered in oil indicating it needs cleaning out and the crank case breather checking and replacing, the turbo should also be checked as this can on some occasions also be an indication of leaking turbo seals.
Has anyone an idea do the costs involved to sort the above none sound to major

all depends on how good the access is, price of the boat and if you are able to do some of this yourself
i have never seen the perfect boat to buy, its always been a compromise so far
if i could choose i'd rather have a slower boat with great access than a rocket ship and needing a small nimble mechanic

if you are paying a professional, you'd be looking at:
1&2 ? £500 to fix the leaks, providing its just seals, if the heat exchangers need replacing way more money
3 ? £500 including a new elbow
4 a VP turbo is going to cost you 1.5k plus labor

just my best guesses !

Without labour the parts for the heat exchanger are about 30 quid each. Required O-ring, brass plug. While you're in you may as well replace the sealing strips for flow at about 2.5 quid each for 3 and rod the stack.

exhaust elbow is about £230 may as well replace the bellow hosing and clips too.

4 is imo more indicative of a turbo wearing out. £8-900 for a new turbo with all the gaskets or about £300 for a rebuild if possible. If the oil is very thick and sticky it's more likely then that the Supercharger bearings have gone. £3500.

Labour in hours for me to do the heat exchangers and after coolers about 5 hrs. Elbow about 2 hours. remove and fit turbo about 2 hrs, and super charger 30 minutes.

With the exception of a possible SC failure these are all pretty normal maintenance items. I did mine last year including steering helmet seals and a few other odds and sodds.Untitled.png

Oil cooler £1000 now , a regular problem at that age , labour will be dependent on access and what boat it’s in and of its port or starboard .

Heat exchanger easy fix but would be best serviced while it’s off which in turn makes the oil cooler swap and easy job .
Exhaust elbow £230 but normally the turbo flange is corroded so that’s a turbo or repair , anywhere between £750 and £1500 depends which way you go , plus labour again no idea as can be difficult.

Aftercooler oil leak is due to worn turbo shaft slip rings so again a turbo repair , access to remove intercooler and strip down to degrease oil and Rydelime the water passage .

Strange this post comes up as I’ve just done all this to a Nimbus over last 2 weeks .

Bruce, I'm not aware of any cooling issues or leaks on our boat but is removal, clean, check end caps, etc for the three coolers something that might be worth doing one winter? Or is it a case of "if its isn't broke...."?

Also, I think you'd be lucky to get a turbo rebuild for £300 as they normally need a new exhaust housing in which case they're nearer £650. I ended up buying new for around £900 (as you quote above).

regarding turbo. Yes if you have worn the tubo out, but having faulty bearings or burnt blade tips does not equal corroded turbo housings too. Lets not Internet Lore get in the way every time.

As for checking I am not in the camp of if it's not broke dont fix it. I think that reactive maintenance is more expensive long term. When I checked mine everything I wanted to check was absolutely fine. It's what I didnt want to check that became the eye opener. Every brass plug had turned to clay. The brass plug on the heat exchanger anode. The brass plug on the intercooler drain and horror of horrors what would have sunk my boat for sure was the brass drain plug in the hydraulic steering oil cooler. If you dont check you dont know.

Thanks Bruce.

These were our Turbos, recently removed (and still working - just)!

yeah, those look like they need replacing entirely due to housing corrosion

These could be recon'ed

BTW. My stance on proactive maintenance is largely due to me doing the work. A sole trader couldn't work like that easily but a dealer can. I let a dealer have a go on my boat one year. They were great but it almost put me into penuary. So I guess if you go the dealer proactive stance you really have to start from the word go and just leave them to it. Great if you have the funds.

Running a syndicate boat requires a slightly different mindset; firstly, all costs are shared and secondly it's important the boat is working all season. Therefore some proactive maintenance seems to be sensible to me. Plus the VP dealers in Spain seems to be quite efficient and 'only' charge £44 an hour!

Bruce where do you get your parts.
