A freind is looking at a boat with KAD32 and what does he need to be looking at so that when he does hire a enginneer for the sea trial that he has not wasted his money on somthing that could be obvious .
Thanks in advance .

Check sump for corrosion
There should be no or very minimal engine oil leaks although very slight oil from under the aftercooler (port side) is not necessarily an issue.
Coolant reservoirs may be slightly discoloured but if a rust colour may reflect neglect of coolant change.
alternator should be corrosion free - corrosion here probably indicates a water pump leak.
If front of engine is very sooty it suggest belts are shot - look to see pulleys are corrosion free
Check oil level as with any engine

Agree with all that has gone before. The FW header tank fluid should be a healthy green colour. Don't overfill it cos it will just blow out. Ensure supercharger oil is topped up. Its a Volvo specn and quite expensive, but the s/charger spins at many 000's or revs, ignore at your peril. Alternator is in a silly place beneath the raw water strainer, ideal to catch drips and leaks etc. Also beware if someone has cracked the raw water strainer lid and allowed water to POUR all over the alternator. Ensure belts are good, and that fuel and oil filters have been changed reguarly. Jamie also reminded me that the valve clearances should be checked per 500 hrs! Basically I found the kad to be pretty bomb proof apart from the position of the alternator. Good luck.

I thought Tappets check is every 200 hours not 500 on the kad32 and AD31.

I had the tappets checked when I bought my boat (approx. 250 hours) - very little adjustment. Had them checked again (approx. 500 hours) - no adjustment.

I'll have them checked again soon while the boat is out of the water (800 hours).

Just an FYI.
