My engines are now just touching 200 hours and I need to check / adjust the clearances.

Looking at the engines, the biggest task seems to be removing all bits to enable suffiienct access to the rocker cover! I'm fully OK with adjusting 'normal' tappets, but never attempted multi-valve.

Any help / assistance / guidance would be greatly recieved.

Cheers
John

You need to remove the oil filter bracket, the fuel filterbracket. the mounting plate they sit on, then the injection pipes. Then you can remove the valve cover with a bit of jiggling as it hangs up on the air pipe to the turbo usually at the rear.
Replace the 6 'O' rings on the injectors and the 13 copper washers on the return pipe from the injectors.
Be careful not to damage the rubber seal on the valve cover as this is not available as a gasket you have to make a new one from silicone if its damaged.
Its about 3 hrs per motor, pm me if you have any problems.

Remove the pipes completely, I also remove the spill rail pipe return pipe that goes to the top of the injector pump that way its easier to get the rocker cover off, then you need to follow the correct procedure in setting the clearances as per the manual, failing to do it correctly will not set the clearances correctly and can break the fingers that operate the valves, if your on the southcoast and its a twin engines boat I can give you a price to do it, volvo say 4 hours per engine but if its in a boat that has a fairsize engine room and a man can stand at the front its not too bad.

Pm me if you require any more help.

Thanks for all.

I'm prety confident as the manual is quite specific in regard to the adjusting procedure.

It's a Sunseeker Superhawk, so engine access is really good. I'll report back to the forum when I've done the job - probably in a few weeks.

VolvoPaul,

I will need to do this job on my Fairline Targa 34 soon, currently at 160Hrs. I used to build rally car engines many moons ago so know how to adjust tappets, but any tips for a T34?

Do you ever get out to Spain? Lots of British boats now in the new MDL marina in Sant Carles, PM me if your interested in a trip over for a working weekend!

Thanks
