My boat has two Volvo gearboxes...
They are marked MS 3B 1,93:1

I have only just got the boat and have never had any dealings with this kind of gearbox.. I was just wondering if they need any kind of attention or servicing..Oil change etc etc .. and how to go about it.

thankyou

Chris

Servicing the gearboxes is all part of a routine service.

It may have 2 anodes in the pipework which if in salt water need changing every year.

Change the oil ep80/90 gear oil, change it every 2 years or if its gone brown/black.

Black oil indicates the cone is slipping.

Thanks for the reply Paul.
Unfortunately I am a total novice with this gearbox. I did mention I had no experience with this Volvo unit... and none too clever with engines generally.. You mention anodes in the pipework ? what pipework..where ??
( boat is presently in the water )

also where do you drain from and top up .. how much oil will it take..

sorry to sound like a complete dummy... I am, but at least I dont mind admitting it, I will learn.

thanks again

Chris

YES on the bottom plate there is adrain bung to the side, 14mm from memory, place adrain tin underneath, undo plug.

Undo the dipstick to allow air in so that oil can drain out, behind the stick is a plug, allen key socket, thats the filler plug, about 2 litres from memory.

I have been using gear oil in ms3s for years but as said here it says engine oil, never had one blow up on me yet so up to you what you use.

Hope this helps.

The anodes are on square headed plugs at the rear of the gearbox on the pipes.
