Were the gearboxes painted the same colour as the engine?

Not sure. The gearboxes were OEM'd from Hurth, I believe. OUrs are also silver (HS63A's).

none of the D4/D6 engines i have fitted/serviced have had green gearboxes but all the older engines i work on are painted green

Most of the hurth hs 63 boxes are silver as the kad 43 and 44/300 have to use this box as the ms box is not quite up to the job at that hp, also the hs box is electronic shift on the 44 and 300 engines.
Only thing thats fails is the driveplate!
