Volvo folding prop grease

What do folks use on firstly the splines on the drive and secondly on the prop gear teeth themselves?

I was advised not to grease the gear teeth themselves as it collects grit and causes wear. But I was advised to grease the three pins that the blades pivot on. I'm not sure if this advice is entirely self-consistent.

Those and the splines - any waterproof grease.

I have always used the posh blue Volvo grease on the teeth and pivot pins; it's not cheap but a little goes a long way. I think any reputable marine grease is fine for greasing the splines, it's only for the ease of getting the prop on and off. I think the Doctor Barnacle is formulated to discourage marine growth on the blades, rather than as a lubricant.

I don't think it matters what you use, you are just applying it because the prop. was sooooo expensive.
It will be gone the first time the boat is motored for an hour but the water it is immersed in will lubricate it fine.

It just makes you feel better. At the end of the season the stuff I put on the splines is still there but everything else is gone and the prop still work fine as it did at the start of the year.

Indeed but I didn't buy it, came with the boat. Wouldn't have been my first choice. Fair point about water lubricaiton though
