Once again Volvo have a product which seems to have a design fault leading to the owner having to pay stupid prices for a replacment as the original is no longer available.
The Engines are 72P EDC 1996 they are on there second lot of EDC units the last pair have done just over 200hrs, and one seems to have failed yet again, I am now left with having to possibly purchase TWO more at £2600 plus vat as you have to the pair they can't talk with there older brother?

I would be interested if any body else hqas suffered similar EDC problems, I know in the states a number of 70 series engines have suffered.

I am sure the older units can be repaired or modified if anybody has an old one in the shed I will buy it off them to have a play. It is the boast sensor that fails which is built in on EDC 1 but not on the new one, I WONDER WHY!!

Also got KAD 44's and had port engine EDC unit fail at 550 hours. Sounds like the same problem i.e. boost sensor. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I understand that it is a known problem, condensation in the tube leading to the sensor causes corrosion and the sensor to fail. Was able to replace just the one, they do not work together on the KAD 44's, but then again we replaced like for like.
Did you change the pair last time? to the next generation? and you still need to replace both?

I am just waiting for the starboard engine EDC unit fail /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif and whilst out the other day I had the symptoms but fortunately found the tube supplying the EDC sensor had loosened /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I know of quite a few who have had these EDC problems over the years. When it came to buying a used S37 this year, I made sure to get one with a good old fashioned mechanical system (AD41's). No doubt the cables will snap soon....you simply cannot win!!

Have had a look inside and the plastic potting compoud can be removed, if I can get an old one I should be able to source a replacment sensor. I have just rigged up a boast pressure system to monitor both engines taken from the discharge of the intercooler if the weather allows soon I will be able to check.
I have also sprayed contact cleaner up the sensor to see if that breaks thro the corrosion.

Keep the mails coming the more info Volvo have the better for all??

They must be able to be fitted as a single installation surely? If so could Volvo not configure yours as two singles and hence able to work without talking to the other??? This would at least mean you could replace a single EDC. You would obviously lose some functions such as auto-sync....but then the value of those functions will rapidly become apparant..... just an idea

I also have had a problem with the EDC unit on a KAMD300
fitted to a Jeanneau MF925.
The boat was only 14 mths old with 200 hours of use.
Volvo have refused to help towards any costs which are i.r.o.
£1500 (Expiration of warranty) - we are consulting a solicitor at moment.

Yep. Also have 73EDC with Boost sensor u/s ( It's also his third engine blow up in the last 18 months or so)

Perhaps it time our Editor may like to do an bit on EDC's in small boats, I know the big stuff is reliable enough, can't have thousands of tons of vessel out of control or commission can we but us small stuf is a different matter?
