I want to replace the drive belts on my Volvo TAMD41P engine but have two problems. The first is I have to do almost everything by feel and the second is that the service manual diagrams are nothing like my engine. I have twin V belts running together from the crankshaft pulley to the alternator and the raw water pump. I have located the bolts securing the alternator but can't see how to tension the new belts when I get them on. Suggestions will be much appreciated.

Sir I have AD41p's which I think are the same as yours only coupled to outdrives. I have 2v belts on each engine & a further belt for power steering. I have changed the belts many times & it is so easy I could do it blind folded so doing it by feel should be relatively easy! I take the tension up at the alternater. So new belts on & 1 of the alternater bolts is on a slider, think it's the bottom one. Then if you are strong pull the alternater upwards to tension belt whilst tightening the slider bolt with the socket. And then tighten the second alternater bolt, tightening the bottom bolt is usually enough to hold the tension. I actually use a wooden hammer (wait for it) handle to hold the tension as it fits perfectly & I have the room.
Hope this helps but it really is very easy. Hope Volvo Paul doesn't come along & tell me off for doing it wrong!!.
I have also found with modern belts they very rarely need re tensioning.

Thanks mm1. I raised the question because the Volvo manual talks about using an Allen key to adjust the tension but there doesn't seem to be anywhere on my engine to put one. I must admit I hadn't thought of using a hammer!

Hi the hammer is always my first thought but then SWMBO tells me to think about it(women eh) I had KAD 42's in my previous boat & the belts on those we're certainly adjusted by a socket/Allen key on one of the pulleys. My engines are AD41p 200hp. Circa 2000. Again perhaps someone will confirm the set up on your boat.

From memory as I have kad 44's with a tensioner now I seem to remember the AD41 does work as per the diagram above. I also used the shaft of a hammer or something as a lever under the alternator to tension the belt and then tightened screw nr 7. Bit fiddly but it works.

It is the same base block. You might be able to replace the arm with the KAD 44 version which has a tensioner or modify along the same principle.
