Volvo dph sterndrives prop corrosion

DPH Props

Thats exactly as mine looked when received back from Hamble Propellers.
To preserve the condition i coated with the two part Propspeed finish. Worked very well, props just needed a wipe over with a damp cloth after 9 months in the water!!

Volvo DPH sterndrives propellor corrosion

I thought I would touch base with Hamble Propellors and here is their helpful reply.

"We would have to view your propellers to see if they are repairable as when they get corroded they cannot be welded. We only supply the Match series of Duo propellers which are aluminium but slightly thicker than the Volvo ones. You can get stainless steel ones but I believe only from Volvo. If we can repair your propellers they work out around £60 to £80 each plus vat."

I have checked with Volvo and they confirm that they do not offer stainless props for this model of sterndrive.

DPH Propellor Corrosion

I would like to make contact with users of Volvo sterndrives (DPH model) that are experiencing corrosion issues with their propellors to understand whether this is a common problem. When once the engines (2 x Volvo D6-310s in my case) are out of warranty, it appears that Volvo are reluctant to accept responsibility.

I have had two boats since 2005 with the D4 260's and D6 350's and in that time i have had 16 new props all within the warranty period. three sets to the D4 one within 6 months from new and one set to the D6 which was in Dec 2008. Now that my current boat is out of warranty the Volvo agents are just fobbing me off.

in Jan 2010 I was told that the problem was down to the shore power coming in the boat on the port side. the port props where far worse than the stbd side. I was also told to swop the props over , which i did.

I lifted the boat yesterday and severe corrosion once more , but the stbd props (IE Ex port props) were severely corroded far more than the port props . Anodes doing there job , but the stbd props are eating themselves
Volvo have a case to answer.
i would buy a new set if i knew it would cure the problem , but i feel that it won't as the propellors are still suffering from corrosion. Volvo have done nothing to resolve all of our issues once out of warranty.

Why don't we all go public in all the boating media in order to get the problem looked at , because as as individuals volvo laugh at us , but united we are a strong voice.

I don't know if it's of any help or relevance but you can now buy Mercury Thunderbolt props for Volvo drives. You have jfm to thank for that snippet of probably useless knowledge as it was in the copy of MBY I bought to read about Match. It says they are a suitable replacement for Type F Duoprops typically fitted to the DPS and that they are claimed to have a high level of corrosion resistance - and then goes on to mention to that that's a good thing because an early batch of the Volvo props were carp.

A certain customer of mine has had his steering rams fail, boats now just 3 years old, was fobbed off by VP agents so rang office of fair trading who stated that goods have to comply with a 6 year warranty, he went back to Volvo agent, then VP uk at Watford with his info from OFT, net result 2 new rams fitted by agent FOC, what a result!!

It seems to me we just grin and bear it, ive heard so many times VP customers told " its out of warranty", first year by VP then second year backed by agent who serviced the boat, My advice is to threated nicely show them you know your rights as its seems to me both the rams and props are designed and made from materials that just dont suit the purpose they we intended for, as for props my props on my boat are 15 years old, so are the rudders and shafts, and not falling apart like the 2 items discussed, so they have got to be design flaws.

Its emperative that the plasti fairing just in front of the prop is undamaged, we see many during service that are cracked or have a bit missing, if this happens it generates turbulence and bubbles form which then cause cavitation and prop erosion.
Alos you could have a neighbour with dodgy electrics and stray current will pass straight through whatever is between his boat anfd the nearest ground usually a steel piling in the quay.

Resurrecting an old thread as its the time of year when we are looking closely at our props ?. Interested to hear if
1) people still suffer from corrosion with their DPH - G series duoprops ?
2) Does prop antifoul paint help?
3) within the thread there is discussion about stainless props and now VP have brought out replacement H series props have you been tempted to convert, if so how is it going ?

My props are the original ones from 2010.
There are some areas of pitting, but they are not too bad.
I do paint them with Trilux.

I think the larger engines do a better job of shredding these props, with the higher forces causing more cavitation damage.
But with a D4-260 they work well.

H-Series props look good, and I will upgrade when the current props start to look ropey.

I had some props from 2006 on a d4 260, on a boat that lived in salt all year round, last time it was lifted they were looking a little pink, but still sounded solid when tapped, no obvious pitting or bits missing from then.
