Volvo D6-310 Crankcase Breather filters

It's important that your crankecase can vent properly. In too much pressure builds up, it will have to release somewhere. the next weakest component are your Turbo seals. So a badly blocked crankcase filter can burst your Turbo Seals.

Don't know how often you need to change it though, just that a blocked one is bad news
 
Thanks for the info - much appreciated as I didn't really understand the significance of these filters.

Still curious why they are so expensive though when main airfilter which is much larger of course is a 1/3 of the price? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
If it's anything like the one in the D4 it looks to me as though it can be cleaned with degreaser and reused. I certainly intend to try that as my next service is due after the warranty expires. It seems to be just a nylon mesh on quite a substantial frame so if it doesn't disolve in Jizer why not?
 
My thoughts exactly! At the price Volvo charge for it worth a try. Let me know how it goes perhaps. I will take a look at D6 ones and see whether cleaning feasible.
 
I have Volvo D4 260,s which are now out of warranty so i service them myself. Also horrified at cost of crankcase breather filters. Spoke to local volvo agent who advised they instruct their guys to check that mesh filter is ok. If so they wash them with clean Diesel, dry and refit. i have done this and no problems as yet
 
Agreed £80 is robbery. I think the reason Volvo get away with this is because there's no truck engine equivilent? Or suprious parts?

And I though £20 was expensive for the KAD32 crank filter /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
I have just serviced our D4s. The breather was indeed robbery but I can’t imagine how you have managed to clean them.

They appear to be a white plastic mesh cylinder on the internal diameter giving the filter its form with a type of coarse material on the outside diameter. It feels like there is some sort of sponge / fibre sandwiched between the white mesh and the outer material. The whole lot is then 'potted' with epoxy or similar into discs forming the ends of the cylinder.

How do you folks clean them? I can see that a toothbrush and degreaser will sort the white internal mesh but I can see how to clean the internal filling with any degree of confidence as they will not come apart as they are potted at the ends. Am I missing something?

Also, VP recommends changing them either annually or every 200hrs (which ever is the sooner). Surly on this type of item, life must be more running hours than elapsed time dependent?

Ive just had a look at there website, that filter is about the only one thats way cheaper than the original, though worth looking at. Im going to compare them side by side because if it breaks up it will be sucked into the engines turbo, which will cost you a lot more than £80 to replace!

I didn't realise there was so much suction on the breather system that it could suck in a plastic filter through a small tube and then destroy the engine but you clearly know alot about volvo engines and work for Volvo as your forum name implies.

Anyway I think it is the same filter as Volvo supply as it is identical in every way,
it even says on the webpage that is is supplied to them by the suppliers that supply volvo penta.
