Over the last few months when I start the Starboard engine (from cold) I get an annoying ticking noise from the engine for the first 15 minutes until it warms up.

2 volvo engineers have looked at it and adjusted the tension on the belts, although it helps a bit it still continues. One mentioned that there is more load on the belts in the intial phase from the alternator ( not being a qualified engineer, I did not want to chellegene that opinion!)

Has anyone else encountered this rather annoying ticking noise? any advice much appreciated.

Volvo D4 - 260 ( approx 3 years old, serviced annually)

Many thanks

PS changing boats or taking a walk down the pontoon for the first 15 mins already considered!!

try replacing the automatic belt tensioner. done loads of these. there was a rework of them a couple of years back. not a recall just an improvement on the pulley.

I've had this on a D6 before. The explaination seems about right. The one I delt with did it for one season then went away when new batts were fitted.

dont recall ever seeing one with automatic tensioner, the ones i have done had to be done up to 70 nm then tightened

The main belt has that where you fit a half inch torque wrench straight into the tensioner then tighten the two bolts. but you should have the self tensioning one for the other drive belt. you need a torx drive socket to remove tension to get the belt off............help me out spannerman

That would be the compressor belt, but not on D4 260

what do you mean not on a D4 260? The 260 is supercharged. And it has this arrangement as i have changed numerous.

Yes, we are both right, the out drive version has compressor and the inboard does not, we now need to know which version the op has?

I appreciate the comments and suggestions, the D4 - 260 has outdrives

hopefully this can resolved with the advice given

I have changed many idler pulleys, in my cases the bearings have failed creating the noise and screeching belts, all quiet after new pulleys fitted.

Thanks for the suggestion VolvoPaul, are you able to give me an indication what sort of cost is involved?
cheers

Im talking about the idler pulleys not the tensioners/pulleys.

To change all you do is remove the belts and with the correct size allen key, 6/8mm from memory just unscrew each pulley and fit the new ones, they have been modified since the first generation to eliminate bearing failure, then refit the belts and correctly retension.
