Hi all

During winter storage the marina will not allow engines to be started in the yard.

If i remove the raw water strainer lids and carefully pour an antifreeze solution into the

water strainer aiming at the area that leads into the raw water cooling circuit will this find its

way around the engine to protect over the winter. Should i also notice the mix exiting from

the drive legs so i know the circuit is full?

Many thanks

Your better to have it winterised properly by draining the coolers of salt water, flushing through with the hose via the strainer then mixing antifreeze/ water mix just before it's lifted out. As it's a sterndrive there will be salt water in the pipe before the sea water pump, this can be drained when the boats out by removing the pipe.

Ok many thanks Paul. Maybe i can arrange for you to Winterize?

Major leg service due winter 2013.

Winterize without running engines

Hi all.

If it is an early D4 260 (the one with the water filter AFTER the salt water pump) you can achieve your goal this way.

With an electric pump, a couple of home made connections, and a modified water filter inner cap (the clear plastic one) it is possible to make sure the salt circuit is fully flushed and protected against frost.

Pull the pipe off the heat exchanger (the pipe that runs to the exhaust elbow). Connect a hose to this and to the intake of your pump.
Modify the plastic inner cap to have a connection in the center of it (cheap skin fitting, drill a hole, sikaflex fitting into hole). Connect pipe from this and put in a bucket of 50% coolant mix with Nutrasalt added.

Remove water filter lid, hold modified inner in place, Put pipe from outlet of pump into bucket. Turn on pump. Run pump until you are happy system has been flushed/protected.

Drain pipe from salt water pump to transom, drain impeller cover.

Can also be used with later versions, but will need to remove impeller and plug inlet to filter. System will also work with all other engines with modifications.

:)
