Hi folks. I'm having to do some serious repair work on my newish Volvo D1-30: seawater got into the heat exchanger and one of the cylinders. I shall have to change a number of parts, but the biggest (I hope it doesn't get any worse) is the heat exchanger itself. Now what I wanted to know is whether I might be able to source this part from a non marine engine (and thus pay half the price) or at least find it second hand. Any ideas, anyone?

Don't understand this, the heat exchanger is meant to have seawater in it. If the tube stack has leaked, it's probably repairable, but in any case can be bought separately, so you don't need to buy an entire heat exchanger. What actually failed?

AFAIK the heat exchanger is what differentiates the marine engine from it's land-based version. I think you'll be out of luck trying to source a HX for an engine which is not meant for a boat. I have a VP D1-20 and have had occasion to dismantle the HX. I don't see how it could have been damaged by sea water as it is designed to use seawater to cool the engine coolant.

You can find a workshop manual at www.polarpowerinc.com/volvo_penta_workshop_manual_part_b.pdf
It will provide part numbers for ordering the parts required and also you can get some idea of what you're dealing with before you start dismantling.

I have a D1-30 and if there is an engine anode Volvo have been very successful in keeping it a secret.
Thanks for the link to the full manual by the way. Hope I never need it!

Perhaps a slight thread deviation, but I cannot see an engine anode anywhere, neither on my engine nor in the manual. My previous engine had one and it needed to be changed at least once per year.Does anyone know if this engine requires one?

You would not expect to find an anode in an indirectly cooled engine. It is protected from corrosion by the inhibitors in the antifreeze solution with which it should be filled. ...... You don't have an anode in your car engine do you?

Some makes of engine have an anode in the sea water side of the heat exchange. This is not the case with the VP one on this engine.

No need for an anode as heat exchanger does not have a mix of metals in contact with eachother. Some other engines do, and anodes are common in seawater cooled engines.

Yes, I've been less than clear and a bit dense too! Seawater has been forced up the exhaust into one cylinder, causing corrosion. And the mechanic showed me the heat exchanger (dismantled) with what is clearly a hole caused by corrosion on the inside of the workings. Unfortunately, he was speaking in Italian and I'm not au fait with the technical terms in Italian (or in English much, either). I'll try and glean more info and let you know.
Naturally, I won't find the heat exchanger on a tractor (doh!) but I was hoping there might be a source for second-hand ones.
ps thanks for the manual!

I had one on a Beta 13. It was in the HE.
