So before we embark on our annual cruise what spares should I carry and where to buy including how much oil to carry ,I was thinking a gallon and what oil do you use

5l of VP oil
5l of VP coolant
2l VPGearbox oil
2 Spare Pré filter elements
Raw water impeller
A full set of belts
set of filters and a spare air filter
1l of hydraulic oil for steering
small tube of grease
Vaseline for sea strainer lid
 
A set of belts, bearing in mind if you have twin sterndrives the belts are different on the engine with the servo pump. A set of water separator and engine diesel filters for each engine, same with impellors and the tools to change them. Engine oil is VDS3 spec or higher, a gallon for each engine should be enough, also some coolant and a litre of ATF for the servo steering. A few assorted hose clips and a good work light and a telescopic magnet, and a mirror on a stick is very handy as leaks always seem to come from hard to see places!
 
The volvo manual states that the oil capacity of the d6 is 20 litres, and that it should be vds2 spec.
 
Volvo workshops I have worked for have only been using VDS 3 for at least the last 6 yrs, don’t even order VDS 2 for the bulk oil we use in the workshop.
 
Agreed, Spannerman. My Volvo manual said VDS2 but it was written over a decade ago. All I could find from reputable suppliers was VDS3. There are some cheap, um 'alternative', suppliers that offer VDS2 and when I bought my boat 5 years ago the oil spectrum analysis caught one of them out, so we changed the oil for the right stuff (paid for by the broker, lol).
 
I wouldn't bother with too much oil/coolant - in the very very very unlikely event you get a serious fluid leak what ever you carry won't be enough and the least of your worries and you can get oil/anti freeze/water anywhere as a temporary solution ( it will all run like clockwork, so just enjoy )

I would take tools, impellers, belt(s), primary fuel filters X 4. suitable fuses, new tube of instant gasket, new pack of araldite glue, selection of electrical crimp connectors, selection of jubilee clips, self amalgamating tape, insulation tape, duck tape, some twin core cable(black/red 12v stuff) soldering iron and solder,
now the important stuff:-
2 X spare float switches for the shower pump out box (ebay £8 seem to be better than original Rule design).
Full fun box plus spares.
edit - make sure the anchor shackle is tight and properly moused. (shackle pin wired in), 2 x cheap led torches - bound to drop one in the drink. on that subject, spare reading glasses if you use them.

Dont know your engines, do know there is so much jellyfish in the water you cannot fail but to suck up a kilo plus per mile. So impellers, baskets and tools to unblock pipes etc.

She is to fast ,and at least I will be catching fish as u can’t
 
Next time you go out try looking into the water. Must be 10 jellyfish to a cubic meter. I dont care how much slower than me you are, you are going to suck some of those babies up. My baskets were full.

Hell I wouldn't trust me neither Roy but look in Conwy Mariners. Or get Val to. Huge bioluminescence and jelly fish swarms

when I went tope fishing a couple weeks ago I got stung plenty just retrieving anchor warp. Belly armpits the lot. Was eina sir. I nearly cried :D
 
to be fair those pics showed concentrations brought on by tide and currents. But there are huge amounts out there. Jelly fish can be a right nuisance blocking intake pipes and the gauze in the baskets after the impeller has chewed them up. I have worked on ships off West Africa where the things crippled intake pumps and brought production to a halt. Just a note to Roy to watch temps and do daily checks on the baskets and carry a couple spare baskets in case.
