Volvo AD41 225HP

Well having now physically looked at an Antares 760 in the flesh, we have decided it is too small for our requirements.

I am now looking at two more boats in the next couple of weeks.

One has twin 225HP Volvo AD41's with 350 hours, full service history on a 32 foot boat
One has Twin Yanmar 140HP 4LH-HTE with 540 hours fully serviced on a 30 foot boat

What are peoples views on either engine please, from reading through the forum, there seems to be horror stories about the Volvo engines, but is it the above model.

I thought the AD41's were 200hp? well the ones in an ex boat I once owned were.....
 
That's what I thought, but the broker stated 220's. They are in a Merry Fisher 925. Off to see it tomorrow
 
I believe 200hp is the most powerfull cofig. The 42-series start at 230 hp.

Another vote for 200 hp max from AD41.
Sounds like the broker is not very familiar with motorboats.

I had a pair of AD41B's. I liked them and found them to be good old school engines. They tend to be smokey from cold but once warmed up should be fine if they have no issues elsewhere.

They are getting on a bit but parts availability is good and most things on them can be fixed. Most will have lots of life left in them. Mine were on stern drives, on which I had the trim rams replacing, on the engines themselves I changed an alternator, and had mechanics change a leaking cooler and replace a corroded oil sender fitting that was leaking.

VolvoPaul would be able to comment far more than me on what to look for, but I think they have a good reputation compared with a lot of modern motors....
 
More likely Volvo D4 225's if its a newish boat, check if they have four or six cylinders., it will say on the top anyway.
Volvo never made an AD41 225hp for sure but it is possible to uprate to around that figure, AD41 probably one of the most solid engines Volvo have ever made.
 
Volvo Tamd41 P is a bomb proof engine and the last of a long line of 41's with all issues and smoke ironed out. A true marine engine as opposed to other marinised car engines. And unless its been tweeked it will be 200hp.
 
No, it's based on the number of adverts I had to trawl through where:

Engines listed were either wrong power, wrong model, wrong manufacturer, wrong fuel or often all of the above
Listings with incorrect photos
Nav gear either completely wrong or missing - Autopilot a popular one here
Equiptment listed as present but not being installed - and I mean big things like AC or generator
I've even had broker list completely the wrong boat. Went after two S43s that turned out to be S41s and you'll know the difference here.
Most (and I'm sure there are 1 or 2 exceptions) are nothing more than marine estate agents but with half the training and non of the regulation.

And no, I wasn't thinking if the Italian broker. I wouldn't describe him as an idiot - he was a crook

Either don't care and can't be bothered or lack of knowledge, things listed wrongly, old pictures from years ago used for adverts and no clue about half the stuff onboard a boat they are marketing.
Then you have the over promising & under delivering...... or yes one of them is in order .....,,

Getting back from the thread drift. If AD41's they will be 200's not 225 other wise your in kad42 230 territory, like others said good old compression ignition engines, no ecu's or sensors to shut them down.

You get that in all trades, there are good and bad, theses kind of remarks usually come from those who believe they are perfect and all others are not up to the job.

Agreed you do, just like some one who has a chip on there shoulder about stereo typing......
But I'm sure you wouldn't be defending joiners, builders, plumbers,car sales men, mechanics, all of which many many comedians stereo type & use.
I think you shouldn't take other people's experiences & thoughts to heart / personally.
