Friend has a big problem. His V2040 has seized badly.

It has 500hrs, no history of overheating, and none immy before the seizure, apparently. No warning.

He may be faced with about £3000 for rebuild (sounds enormous, but inc labour presumably?).

His question is whether his is an isolated case, or has anyone any knowledge of similar happening?

(This is a genuine posting - no axe to grind, I have a Beta engine).

I have heard of a 2030 "seizing", although this was due to the raw watercooling anti-cyphon value failing. This caused the exhaust to fill with cyphoned cooling sea water until it entered the cylinders. The problem occured when the engine was switched off and did not not become apparent until someone tried to re-start it. Resulted in bent con-rods.

I believe Volvo did the rebuild under the warranty as it was their anti-cyphon valve, and presumeably the engine was less than 3 years old.

This is a point to watch with Volvo anti-cyphon valves. They should be cleaned regularly.
