engine has both water and oil leaks.

the water leak seems to be coming from a perforation in the exhaust elbow - is this a common problem?

the oil leak is a real mystery - not from the filter, not from the rocker box. in fact I cant see any source and to make thigs even odder, the oil is dirty whilst the engine and gearbox oils are clean. any ideas?

the owners manuyal makes no mention of anodes in the heat exchanger. are there really no anodes?

I know exhaust elbows are prone to leaking, the mixture of water and heat isn't good.
Had to replace mine on my old yacht.

For the leaking oil, check the raw w/c pump as that has both an oil seal and a sea water seal on its shaft. The oil part, in my experience, seems to collect dirty oil as it is at an extremity of the engine and doesn't seem to get much oil flow. You may observe oil drips from the slot between the impellor housing and the part attached to the engine.

I've had exhaust elbow clogging (with carbon deposits) but not an actual leak. Still had to replace it though.

Hope this helps

The exhaust elbows are prone to rusting through, unfortunately.
You don't say if you have a saildrive, or where the leaking oil is appearing. I'll just suggest that when I changed my saildrive gaiter recently, I found the source of a mystery oil leak, where small quantities accumulated on top of the saildrive gaiter. It was coming from around the gearbox backplate, which is sealed by a large O-ring.
Not trivial to replace, though, on the saildrive installation.

thanks for a useful reply.

had the elbow off the engine and just as you describe it was blocked with black stuff - which is actually ironb oxide (no doubt vic could say whether its ferrous or ferric /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif ). Turned out the elbow has at least 1cm sq of penetration so that accounts for my water leak.

you could be right about the oil too. I had noticed an oily feel about the water pump but no drips. have spent the last 2 days trying to get rid of encrusted dirty oil under the engine so I could see where the new oil was coming from. yuk /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

why is it that some owners walk round with their eyes shut?

I also have a VP2030 with shaft drive. Oil is most probably where the gear box is connected to the engine. There is a seal (flance?? - i don't know what is called - made of rubber anyway) that after some years you need to replace it.
