The middle injector on our 2003T has gas blowing out past it on compression. Volvo say that to renew the seal, the head will have to come off. Is this really necessary?

Unfortunately the answer is YES! The injector sits in a copper jacket and when this becomes worn there is nothing you can do but replace it. To do thid you have to take the head off and the new jackets should be fitted by a Volvo workshop, otherwise you can get the whole thing back together and find you still have the problem.

It pays to have the valves ground in etc at the same time. And if you are doing all of that work it might pay to get the high pressure pump overhauled at the same time, but go to a lorry garage that does Lucas as this will be cheaper than the volvo agents. Having that done will help to cure a lot of starting problems.

You will need a torque spanner when you set the whole thing up again.

I don\'t think it is...

I don't think it is absolutely necessary to remove the head, but the job does require 3 special tools, so you'll need to get a Volvo Penta service guy to do the work. Might be worth getting a second opinion from a different Volvo agent.

If the engine is getting on a bit, it wouldn't be a bad idea to overhaul the head, but there's a lot of dismantling involved on a 2003T, so if it's otherwise OK it might be best to try to fix the blow-by as easily as possible.
