Not exactly....

That's not exactly right. You first need to set the throttle to nearly full, then pull out the stop control and return it, then start the engine. If the throttle isn't nearly at full, the cold start system won't work.

By all means give up. There's no point posting advice which doesn't work. If you don't know the answer, don't [--word removed--] guess! And, yes, I do have a Volvo 2003 and I do know what I'm talking about, as I can start it easily in cold weather.

PVB has given you the correct advice. Ther has been many posts on this so a search will prove the advice is good. I have a 2002 and therefore follow these instructions. Also be aware that poor starting can also be because of other problems. A number of years ago I took my starter motor and solenoid to a (non Marine ) starter motor specialist and they not only repaired, they carried out a mod that Bosch had sent out years previously and when refitted the turnover speed was amazing compared to the sluggish starting I had experienced previously.
I hope this helps.

As I cannot see a post that explains the procedure, I have had my 2003 for 15 years and have had it in bits to rebuild it, it has now done 5,600 hours the procedure in the hand book is correct. Press the button in and sellect 2/3 throttle without engageing drive ( sounds obvious I know but it will start in gear) pull the stop button all the way up and back. This moves the throttle stop allowing max fuel to be injected, now press the starter it should start within a few seconds, be prepared to reduce revs quickly as engine will rev its head off if left in this state, mine does now after, major rebuild first I serviced the head valves and seats were badly pitted to had both ground, this had little or effect, so I had the bores honed to remove glazing new rings & big ends and main shells all the work I did myself with exception of honeing and valve seats grinding, cost a lot of money that should have gone towards a new non volvo engine, this is a serious consideration if you engine need work done, mine runs fine now but still has original gearbox with modifacation alternator needed replaceing etc etc, new engine comes with all these. I would not rebuild again.

Had my 2002 taken out stripped and rebuilt last year after suffering with terrible starting for a couple of years - the engineer I used always said pull the stop lever twice for a cold start.

Mike, I am interested in this. Do you value other engines more highly or was it the cost of rebuild, performance or other that leads you this. My 2002 is getting long in the tooth but generally I have found it very good. I have previously owned Buhk, Yanmar as well as Volvo?
Thanks.

mostly the cost I have no experience of other engines but I do know Volvo parts are very expensive, having done all the work and spending a lot of money I still have all the old ancilleries which I Have had to spend money on and no doubt will have to spend more. However having done the work, it now serves me very well but its done 5,000 + hours now what will g next.
Regards MIKE
