Volunteer out yesterday chasing a speeder

Was suprised to see Volunteer chase after a speeding mobo yesterday at Pin Mill, they turned around and went after it. Had a quick chat and Mobo reduced speed.

I knew that Ipswich Ports had commisioned them to check speeds a year or so ago but this is the first time I have seen them do it.

I'm rather pleased they are doing this as no one else seems to bother.

I love Speedboats & MOBO's etc but i'm pleased with this. And if a bit of an ear bending was all that was necessary, then that's a good result on all accounts. :)

If its the bloke from Levington,
He stopped me at Pin Mill and reckons i was doing 30knots under the Orwell bridge,
I was in a 4mtre inflatable boat...
He said he had me on radar and couldnt catch me...

Ahhh. That may paint a slightly different picture.. I hope he's not the boating equivalent of the 'bikers' who dress up as Policemen.

I watched the crew of the Volunteer try for 20 mins to revive a chap until the paramedics arrived on the scene , they couldn't save the chap either.
my opinion of the Volunteer crew changed that day ;).

Boat I saw them talk to was a GRP boat similar to a Merry Fisher.

Having had my boat damaged in Woolverston by a speeding Mobo I am all for this, as long as it stays low key and friendly.

I used to wonder about the Volunrteer boat but thing is they are on the water all day and can often get to casulties quicker than the RNLI. Plus they are more than happy to help out on trivial things.

All in all I am happy that they are there and I would feel much better calling them for help because they are already afloat if say I tangled up my prop than calling out the RNLI.

Like most speed issues, on the Orwell its a question of where a boat is doing 20+ knots. I'm on a mooring opposite the Clamp; downstream of that and in the main channel I don't see a planing MoBo causing a problem, as long as due regard is paid to traffic density. Upstream of that, the mooring density is too great to make a speed in excess of the 8 knot limit sensible.

On a good day, under power, I can get nearly 5 knots out of my Twister :D
 
Have to say the team on Volunteer are always courteous, but a friendly wave does no harm. As for Mobo's plaining up the Orwell bang out of order IMHO.

A lot of the culprits are private fishing boats eager to get home but if you are on a swinging mooring or a visitor picking up a buoy it must be very unpleasant.

We were on the receiving end on a buoy at Wrabness, it ain't pleasant but it did test out my Snubber :(

not to mention the ABP Launch kicking up a wall of water
 
This weekend, I saw these two RIBS get stopped.

I heard a lot of shouting, refused to give the boat name and the Volunteer had mentioned they were going to call the police, they also claimed they acted on behalf of the "Suffolk Constabulary" for inforcing the speed limit. As suspected when push came to shove, the police weren't actually called...

Eventually one of the boats told the Volunteer to foxtrot oscar and went off flat out back down the river again...

Whats actually likely to happen -both of these have been reported to the harbour master? If you were listening on 68 you would know what I am referring too..

Looks lke they were off Woolverstone. The big one looks like its a commercial boat looking at the stickers on the stern. I think I've seen that one coming out of Levington with all seats filled.

Was it last year or the year before when a large motorboat was banned from ipswich and discovered none of the other marinas would take him in. Perhaps That will happen to the one that got aggressive.
