I just got the standard brushoff text from Vodafone notifying discontinuation of Passport replacing with the much more expensive (unless you intend to make more than 4 calls/day) Vodafone Traveller. I think I read somewhere on this forum that existing Vodafone Passport customers can opt to continue but the filipino monkey on the end of the line at Vodafone insisted this was not the case. Can anyone clarify and if possible, point me in the right direction to get it contnued, please?

The monkey on the end of my phone (about a month ago) told me that I could continue as long as I wanted; or I could swap to the new tariff.

I explained my usage and he suggested (rightly) that I stay with Passport.

I may give them another call as I am just about to go off to Portugal.

They will remove passport when you renew your contract.

I challenged them as to why they replaced it and the clown told me it was customer driven, he got a bit upset when I started laughing at him.

I am through with using Vodaphone outside UK and am reverting to local sims, I can e-mail my contacts country specific numbers.

What you want is Vodaphone International-I can call my daughters landlines in OZ or NZ for 5p a minute!-also suggest you use PAYG rather than contracts as much more flexible.
You top up either via phone wherever you are in world or from your online account.

Customer Service told me that "International" does not include European countries.
I've pointed out to them that this means that "International" is not international!

You might find that for the occasional short call it is cheaper not to have 2"Traveller" I've told them to cancel my transfer to "Traveller".

I think that Passport on PAYG might be continuing for existing customers.

I also think that the £3 Traveller charge is charged on any day that the phone is used: outgoing, incoming, text or data. Probably applies if Voda send you a text!

I have this and also reacted with some anger. I can cancel my contract apparently and return my phone to them half way through a 2 year contract without penalty. I might just do that as the O2 offering is better.

I was also told that my tarif cost was changing so when it comes in on Nov 1st I will check that my contract has NOT changed as I instructed them. First though its time to cancel the DD in preparation.

I was initially told that passport would continue until my phone contract expired in Oct 2013. I rang a few weeks later, when I got a text saying all the rates were going up, and got a different story.

I found the cheapest option was to buy a Portuguese Voda sim card and I turn off my UK (pay as you go) phone. Why pay 75p to answer a call you don't want? Let callers pay for the call.

I have, for the last 12 years always bought a local PAYG SIM. During the last 6 years, with the advent of cellular data transmission I've increasingly used that.
My impression has been that voice and mobile data on the same SIM make expensive bedfellows and that Vodafone are the greatest, most grasping of all the suppliers.
Ironically I'm on Vodafone, purely for data, here in Greece - 5Gb/month for €30 which has come down to €15. I even had one year of completely free mobile data on a Free2Go WIND PAYG SIM.

These are the companies I've used:-
Voice only - France SFR, Portugal TMN, Spain Movistar, Malta Vodafone, Greece WIND.
Voice and data - France Bouygues, Italy TIM, Croatia T-Mobile.
Data only - Greece Vodafone.

Rates are highly variable, the best ones, on special offer, infrequently advertised and frequently changed - for that reason mine or anyone else's choices will now be invalid.
One has to do a survey on arrival - usually you'll find Vodafone amongst the least attractive offers and their "roaming" charges border on being immorally usurious.
I find it mildly amusing that there should be any angst about the decease of Passport - except they're trying to con suckers into an even more expensive scheme.

PS I do use a Vodafone PAYG SIM in UK, inertia, due to the fact they were my original airtime suppliers in 1990 when cellular was still analogue.

Charles, your useage is somewhat different from mine. I am only out for 2 to 3 months a years and not all at one time. I found it a pain in the arse tracking down local greek cards, especially when Vodafone only cost me some £15 extra for one month including all call to and from the UK including long conference calls. A greek sim would have cost considerably more.

I don't spend hours on the internet, so the 100mb per day for me (a no cost option as is the passport on my contract) is actually the most effective and I have never exceeded it. I would like my children to call me, so they do at no cost to themselves.

So 2 different requirements.

I do not find the vodaphone passport charge of 75p for 59 minutes excessive.

At least my monthly allowance of 600 mins is not lying dormant.

Looking at my pattern of calls, I tend to make a series of calls in one day then switch off. So the new Vodafone offering of one charge per day may infact be cheaper for me, and makes use of my 900 mins in the uk.

Yep, if I have to go to the new tariff SWMBO will be restricted to making all her calls in one day - it will need to be a 24 hour day though. :)

I am somewhat baffled by all this. SWMBO has just come back from the Vodafone shop and was told that for contract phones passport would switch off from 1st Nov and we would be switched to Euro Traveller or could opt out, she then asked if should cancel the contract (another 12 months) or keep passport until the contract ends and got a firm no to both saying passport is not part of any contract it is an "add on".

We have been with Vodafone since they started but I am thinking the writing is on the wall.

As an aside it was refreshing to read about the Belgian lady who mobilised a large part of the community to get the power company to reduce charges, her monthly charge was reduced from 400€ to 79€ by collective bargaining. (for that I read blackmail, give us a better price or we all leave)

Wouildn't it be nice to adopt that tactic with the mobile phone companies......

Just to wind this one up, the non-monkey from Vodafone finally called me up today. When confronted with the facts of my consumption patterns (< 2 calls/week), time spent in the UK (<3 months/year) and itinerary, agreed fully that the new Traveller was pointless and I should terminate, which I have done. Will now run with Skype, Gym-Sim and local PAYGs (including England). Chief Pretty Officer's contract was given a 50% discount so honour upheld all round. Thanks for all the inputs.

Oh Sh!T - Just spoken to monkey at vodaphone (spelt correctly) and apparently the sending or receipt of one text will trigger the £3.00 charge on traveller.

That is just not acceptable - I am waiting for chief Gorilla to call to confirm this stupidity. If this is true - I will cancel contract with a year to run and return my phone to them. Not sure where that will lead legally - probably get a negative credit rating.......

Now looking at O2 for their offerings........
