No, I've used TIM in mobiles, but Vodafone are similarly priced with slightly less good 3G coverage. I've used the Huawei USB modem and wouldn't give it house-room - IMHO a very inefficient, unsatisfactory bit of kit.
SIMs are officially €5, but "discussion" can usually get it free.
Tariffs are highly volatile on data transmission, I was paying €20 for 100', with €5 for additional 100' within the month. Great on 3G, but not so good on 2G.
No need for an Italian bank account but you do need official ID.
Italian mobile networks seemed to prefer selling time rather than capacity - that may have changed now - I got <5Gb/month for free from WIND in Greece last year and expect to pay Vodafone Greece €30/10Gb/month this year.

Charles has it right and I can confirm time over quantity.

I have a Italian Vodafone 3G USB adapter that costs €25/month - can't remember the initial purchase price, but it was trivial. For that one gets 5 hours connection per day with no download limit.

I will be arriving in Italy this weekend when I shall call in the local Vodafone office, pay my €25 and have my month's quota credited on the Vodafone servers. Sometime during that period I shall depart Italy and when I return later in the summer recharge for another month.

Yes, I needed my passport for identification but there was no other restriction.

Charles is probably right about the Vodafone coverage - my Italian mobile phone probably has better coverage with a ITIM SIM, who perhaps also do a similar Internet offer - I'm just too lazy to check. You should shop around.

We've just bought the wind dongle (Huawei E173) for 49 Euros, The Sim was a tenner and with that there's 5 euros of credit. We signed up for the Mega unlimited (which is in fact limited to 10 gig per month, once you've used that the connection goes down to 36k) which ATM is half price for the first 6 months, so 10 euro per month, pay-as-you-go. Not bad I'd say.

So far been quite impressed. It's not so easy to beam into 'free' wifi here......

Hi May be a special offer for the moment!!!!!!

Last week I bought a Vodofone Sim (already had a UK 3G dongle at least 5 years old). Although there were cheaper options available, I bought the sim for 30 euros complete with 5GB of usage with no time limit. I am really pleased with the speed etc. so far no problem with Vodafone coverage in Sardinia

Where did you buy the Sim, ( address of shop?), and what ID etc. did you have to show?

I ask because someone was asking where they could get an Internet SIM on Sardinia a short time ago.

Hi

Bought the sim from the vodofone shop near the marina in Cagliari. Just had to show my passport as ID. Great service from an english speaking lad too.
