Anybody used this PCMCIA card its red with a little flick out aerial while out in a boat? Thinking of buying one! Or can anybody tell me of something better!
Yes, I've got one. It works fine anywhere there is a Vodafone signal, usually 3G. I never need to use the aerial as reception is perfectly good without it.
Thank you I wonder if I could ask as I'm working on a pilot software development. If the card were re-introduced with external aerial option (only for long range sailing) not necessary for normal use. And for the first time on this card an earphone to make the occasional voice call while sailing (key pad on your PC)
What would you think was a good price for a new one/what would you pay? WITHOUT A ANNUAL AIRTIME CONTRACT As you say this will get the weather onboard this is where the value is!
I would be grateful, as you know how reliable this device is!
And in the world (shifting standards GPRS) it works!!
I have used with both the GPRS and 3G cards from Vodafone, and must admit that I found the GPRS one far better. The problem with the 3G was that it kept flicking from GPRS to 3G and back again, which often caused the connection to drop. This may not be a problem any more, this was one of the first 3G cards in the early days of 3G.
One thing I found was that you pretty much had to use an external aerial - Vodafone did a small thing like a ruler that clips to the top of a laptop. Where I live, there is very little signal, but with the external aerial I could manage fine. Even in areas of good signal, the external aerial provides a better connection and minimises the chances of the connection dropping.
Yes I've used one, v. good, works anywhere you can get Vodaphone, handy for Internet forecasts email etc. Be careful about letting your teenage sons use it for msn messenger, I got a £180 bill for one weeks' cruise...
One caveat - need a good three-bar signal or it doesn't work. It may SAY it's working on one or two bars but it speaks with forked tongue - nothing will actually happen.
