There is nothing clever about it getting through firewalls, they aren't designed to stop viruses. That is why everyone should have anti virus software.

Norton alerts me when the e-mail is being downloaded and repairs it or delets it but I am not aware of an attachment with this e-mail and I thought that you could only get a virus when you opened an attachment.

good idea, i use fasthosts to do my hosting and they check on incoming, its strange to see emails coming in as in these ms ones referring to attachments but of course they have been stripped off at pop3 level

It may be stating the obvious, but Microsoft to NOT signal updates by e-mail, see the microsoft web pages.
