What with the condemnation of the steering rams on Volvo DPH drives, I wondered what advantages/reasons Volvo introduced the DPH over tried & trusted models, such as the 290. The aforementioned 290 was mated to the 285 horse KAD300 - so they obviously could take fairly hefty power - so why the DPH? Apart from the steering rams, is the DPH fundementally sound - as it would appear to be far more complex, what with multiple oil chambers etc.

I have DPH A's on my boat - I have been loosly lead to believe these were prone to more problems than the later DPH's - is this true?

Any one have any opinions?

Cheers.

Have you ever tried to manually lift a dph drive compared to the dpe? basically when the d6 was lanched theres no way the dpe would take the power and torque, so the evolution was the dph.

They also got rid of the steering hood system that wears out bushes and pins etc.

Though quite how they have managed to fit such poor steering rams is beyond me as steering rams in water have been around for years with little problems compared to the ones that vp have invented!

I would also comment that the kad 300 is very capeable of chewing up the dpe drive when you hit water borne objects, ask moody hes had 2 new drives last year.

Hydraulic Steering pipes

I have a DPH drive - don't know if it's peculiar just to DPH or all out drives, but check your hydraulic steering hoses - mine have been on for just 4 yrs - and were badly perished.

Cheers Rob - she has just been surveyed and nothing of note was found - but will bear that in mind for the future.
